So? I have dealt with 7 deaths of people that are close to me, and it's no excuse to be a dick.. Not completely without sympathy, the death of someone who raised you is on a whole different level than most, but it isn't your fault. He didn't tell you, how were you to know? I wouldn't beat myself up over it.
