Maybe if you soke the cardboard in hydrogen peroxide you could ward off mold.

^I'd double check this statement OP, for safety's sake - this above poster is a popular liar and an imbecile.

You shouldn't be getting mold in the first place if you properly sterilize (pressure cook) your jars, and make the lids right.

The thing I'd be worried about with cardboard is water retention, could get waterlogged easily and inhibit growth due to over saturation. But if you watch how much much water you mix in, the cardboard *may* suffice as replacement for verm. I've used (sifted, to get the smaller granules out) coco coir in replacement of verm in substrate mixes before, but I don't grow with the PF-tek. Verm is easily accessible at your local lowes/home depot/ plant nursery, shouldn't have too much of a problem finding it.

Your first tek will probably contaminate anyway. You might as well learn it the right way.

People grow culture on pieces of cardboard all the time. And it won't contaminate if it's colonized. However, cardboard doesn't have the same moisture retaining abilities vermiculite does. It just gets soggy and falls apart, the point of the vermiculite is to hold water that eventually gets used by the mushroom. Also, vermiculite cakes can be rehydrated. Soggy falling apart cardboard will not rehydrate so well. Don't listen to peroxide teks, a pressure cooker and sterile work are necessary to get any job done in that area. Honestly buy some fucking verm or coco coir or scratch the pf tek idea and do plain rye grains. They hold moisture just fine.
