1903 springfield stuck bolt

I loaded an '06 round with some bad powder, it was way too hot, and I stuck the damn bolt; can anyone offer some idea as to how to remove it? Im rather fond of the rifle...

break the rifle down to it's components, check for obstructions, and while it's broken down into the Barrel/Stock/Action parts, see if you can free the bolt by checking for an obstruction or stuck part in the action. You could also try to just work it loose.

Ive tried the latter, and it will not work loose. its jammed good. I tried with a rubber mallet and couldnt budge it. Ill have to break it down, I guess..

I'm interested to know what powder you used, how much of it, and what projectile you loaded on top.

Sound like some serious over-pressure if you can't get it open with a mallet, maybe grabbed the wrong can of powder?

You can smell if a powder is bad, hard to explain what it smells like but you'll know it when you smell it.

Did the case rupture? If not you should be able to get the bolt open with a rubber, wooden, or rawhide mallet. The wooden or rawhide would be better.

What specifically makes it stick if not a ruptured case? Fouling in the chamber?

OP, try pouring some Kroil in there and letting it permeate and see if that doesn't loosen it before you start taking hammers to the poor thing.

maybe put the barreled action in the oven at ~200 degrees to loosen it up? May not work though as copper/brass expands faster than steel. Just a thought.

Just case expansion. The bolt kinda cams in to the locking lugs so if you have a really hot load the case expands enough that it pushes the bolt back against the lugs and if the load is hot enough it will stick the bolt.

I have had it happen a couple of times working up a load for my Savage. Not that extreme, just noticed when I went to lift the bolt handle it was a little sticky.
