I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "hex-based"? If you mean that it had hex-shaped tiles that the troops and such move around on, "Battle for Wesnoth" is the only one I remember. Making maps for it was fun, but the few times I played online I got owned.

Cool Re: Computer hex based wargames

Mission Force Cyberstorm is a pretty good mech game on a hex grid.

Indeed I recommend you make space..
I played it a little while ago and then remembered that it has a pretty steep learning curve but so worth it..

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? I think that was hex-based, I suppose you could call it a war game.

Remember a few of those, WW1 & 2 setting, from years ago. Were pretty fun but don't remember names now. Civilization V is hex-based, probably not what you're looking for.

Not so much, I love Civ IV but from what I read Civ V sounds like a god awful abortion of a game.

What I'm looking for is something that is turn based and strictly wargame.

Thx for the suggestions zoklet.

Browsing the amazon reviews it seems they changed a lot of things that they really shouldn't have, basic game mechanics that helped make the series so great.

Cool Re: Computer hex based wargames

The Steel Panthers series of games are some of my favorites. Check these out, if you want:

Steel Panthers World At War http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/sp_waw.htm

Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Wo.../MBT_page.html

I prefer Main Battle Tank; the SP:WAW is more focused on WWII, whereas MBT covers anywhere from the 1940's all the way to 2020. One drawback is that there are like 5 patches you have to download, in the right order, to get the full potential from SP:MBT. If you really like the old school board games, with the hex maps and cardboard chits, you might like this one:

Board Warfare http://personalpages.tds.net/~mcozart/games.html
