Default A movie with an evil/dark atmosphere (but not shock scary/gore kind)

I'm looking for a movie that has a generally dark atmosphere. For example, Mordor in the unedited version of Lord of the Rings showed a bleak atmosphere. Rocks, barren wastes, death...etc, but ends pretty nicely.

The last thing I want is some movie that attempts to shock/gore like Hostel. I do not want that. I want a movie with a solid story line but something that is downright evil. Doesn't have to be satanic evil, but a kind of evil that you just don't fuck around with.

Also when I say no gore, I mean a movie that will rely on blood to make/break it. Obviously deaths are accepted completely, but if the movie is based around "lets cram as much blood in here as possible" then count me out (since that is compensating for something that is missing).
If it leaves a shiver down your back without being cheesy (Final Destination is a perfect example of what I want and dont want), thats good. In Final Destination, you knew that death was after them. It didn't screw around, BUT it was all about dying in a shitty way...

Hopefully I'm not too unclear
I don't watch too many movies, so feel free to recommend away.

-The Road (Dark and Horrible post apocalyptic world)
-No Country for Old men (Death personified chasing a man)
-There will be blood (sinister main character)
-American psycho (Insane although amusing serial killer). Not sure if this is a good one because it is funny if you share the kind of sense of humor I have
-American Beauty (Dark and Depressing in a way but at the same time about achieving freedom)
-The Rules of Attraction (Over privileged college kids who you would think were "OK" who are actually very sad an engage in lots of ridiculous debauchery.

For what you are describing I believe the top 3 will most accurately satisfy your criteria. American psycho could possibly, but like I said, to me it's actually a pretty hilarious movie. American Beauty may just be too dramatic with not to much death, but certainly darkness. The rules of Attraction may not work either because it is mostly about the sadness which can abound from loneliness and interpersonal relationships based on a facade.

All that being said, these are all brilliant movies which deserve to be watched none the less. Also as a side note Daniel Day Lewis' acting in "There Will Be Blood" is some of the greatest acting to ever grace the movie screen, so if you watch any of them make sure that is included.

City of Lost Children
Strange Days

Also the 90s. That was actually a pretty good decade for dark movies.

Though Hellraiser I & II have a lot of gore, it really works off of a deep story of love, and betrayal, followed by more love and even more betrayal. You'll get to know the characters better than most typical gore stories, and the horrific depths people, not demons, will go to to get what they want.

If I recall correctly, Darkness (2002) may meet your criteria for a film. But it has been forever since I've seen it, and can't really recall that much now.

You can't go wrong with The Shining for this category.

You may also want to try the Masters of Horror episode, The Black Cat from season 2 of the show. A great performance by Jeffery Combs as Edgar Allen Poe going mad. Which he's now doing as a theatrical show.

Prince of Darkness is a John Carpenter movie that features less on the gore end, and more on the fear end. The fate of the world hangs in the balance of science and religion. ...And time!

And I may get hated on this, but the first Blair Witch Project is a fairly accurate description of what you seem to be looking for. Though for as much hate as it would come to get, it was highly successful and set the standard for that POV genre that they started. Many themes can be seen being repeated from Blair Witch in recent films of that genre, particularly the negative outcome ending, were the protagonists die or are other wised presumed dead at the end of the film.

-Grey

Great and those two picks have opened up a desire for me to watch those and more. The Square - Delicatessen - as well as others.

I find European films with the human interest depictions more interesting than the simplistic commercial fare that US films are descending into.

Pi (Math symbol), it's similar to Eraserhead in the sense that it's a very textural movie, but also very dark.

Most of my suggestions have been said; the only one that's not would be Children of Men. It's bleak... very bleak. 20-years-hence dystopian-type film.

I second (/third/fourth...) The Machinist, Pi (FYI directed by Aronofsky, of Requiem For A Dream fame), The Road and No Country For Old Men.

^ fuck ya Children of Men is awesome

When it comes to 'dark atmosphere' you should REALLY check out some David Cronenberg movies.
Especially 'Dead Ringers' and 'The Fly' oh oh and 'Existenz'

'Jacob's Ladder' is dark, and one of my favorite movies ever
'Fight Club' is definitely dark
- Requiem for a Dream
I guess all the others have been mentioned

Dog Soldiers is a pretty dark movie.. not really an evil atmosphere, but nonetheless.

Antichrist is also pretty dark and... special.

Se7en could probably also be considered a dark movie.

And then like others said.
Robocop and Hellraiser.. Atleast the first ones.
Robocop 1 is horrible, and the bad guys are really, really bad.

Hellraiser is unique in its own way and even though pinhead would argue if he's evil or not ( demons to some, angels to others ) i still think he's pretty evil.
I suggest the first two hellraisers.
Anything above that still maintains gore, but less interesting facts.

^ Robocop 1 was the first and only film to give me nightmares, back when I was 10 or 11 and thought nicking an 18 to watch with a mate was a good idea. The scene where he gets shot to death in a warehouse stuck with me for a couple years.

Also consider the first Alien film.

And One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

EDIT: Personally, though, I thought Hellraiser was fucking terrible, just so embarrassingly tacky and... well, '80s.

I'm glad I could help ya out, although slightly disappointed that you missed that on your own; I mean why the hell else would anyone (realistically) be that hell bent on killing someone for stealing someone else money lol.

Children of men is a good suggestion, not to mention it has some of the greatest single long take sequences in all of cinema.
The one I'm especially found of is when they get ambushed while driving on the road, and the black man (forget his character or actor name) ends up killing the police. Its an excellent scene even if it was not all done in one take, but it makes it feel so realistic because of this technique. Everyone should watch this film to see the mastery of long takes by whoever this cinematographer was, even if you only watch those specific scenes.

cause he has principles and one of those principles was to never go back on his own word.

And also did that scene near the end where that "death" guy got hit by a car and paid that kid for his bicycle and to keep his mouth shut actually mean anything or was it for nothing?

It's fun in an 80s B horror movie kind of way, but yeah it's not particularly atmospheric. I remember I saw that stretching scene on Bravo's old "100 scariest movie moments of all time" count down and was so excited to rent it...turns out, that is the ONE awesome scene. The rest is kinda meh.

Also, the clueless boyfriend who shows up at the end when her house is on fire and shit and is all "cool magic box, what's it do?" and tries to take it from her made me laugh hysterically.

Added spoiler tags to a couple posts. I know some of the movies you guys are talking about are pretty old but still come on, that's why we have 'em.
