Funny you post that as something you think is terrible, it's one of my favourite songs. As far as I'm concerned they're one of the best bands ever and De-Loused in the Comatorium is one of the best albums ever made.

There was one MV song that I thought was almost passable. The rest of it is shite, and it's only as big as it is because the college crowd uses the band as a measuring stick to judge who is deep and intellectual, and who isn't, based on whether or not you like the music.

I haven't really listened to them much, but I thought Jon Theodore's drumming in One Day as a Lion was badass. Will listen to some from this thread.

There has not been a good vocalist since the fucking mid 90s. There's a lot of good bands out there with vocalists who just fucking ruin the whole thing.

At The Drive-In is much better, but The Mars Volta are pretty good.

I only really love one album by either band though. Relationship of Command and Deloused in the Comatorium respectively.

They're one of my favorite bands. Well, I should probably rephrase that. Their first two albums would be in my top 20 of all time, and De-Loused would be in the top 5.

They're not for everybody, obviously. In fact, I wouldn't recommend any of their albums past the first two aside from a select few songs. However, if you're a fan of prog rock at all, you'll probably like them. If you dislike long songs, cryptic lyrics, dynamic stop-start music, heavy distortion, or nasal vocals... you'll probably hate them.

i find their music to be highly pretentious and overly technical. they got some skills but they have a sound that remind of whiny little high school losers that think they're life is so hard because the self-diagnosed themselves with depression when in fact the reason their life is so hard is because they are a whiny little reject that no one likes.

Most emo/screamo music would fit the bill, I think, but not the Mars Volta's music.

At the Drive In was awesome, Mars Volta are good when they're actually making a song and not a 16 minute piece of random noise and shrieking. I like Deloused in the Comatorium and their last 2 albums, but the shit they came out with like 5-6 years ago was horrible.
