In one episode they say they're from Kentucky, but I think that was just the "actors" that play them. Though in the movie they say Kentucky is one of the states next to their one and then there's 3 others that are no where close to each other. So yeah, they don't live anywhere. There's too many contradictions.

As a kid I thought they were from Springfield, Illinois. But then I grew up and found out that there is a Springfield in just about every state...

And whose to say they even live in the US? Or even on Earth?

In the halloween episode where Maggie is an alien hybrid, she sends out a signal which you can see as a circle pulsing out over the United States. If you worked out where the centre of that circle is, that'll be the state they live in.

They've made it pretty obvious now that it's just supposed to be Anystate, USA. They put a lot of purposely fake clues as to their real location into the show, as the location thing has become a running gag.

Here's some interesting reading on the subject.

I remember reading once that Springfield is in part inspired by Portland, Oregon which is mentioned by the link. It also mentions a fair amount of evidence which points to it being in California which is probably just a result of the show being produced in California.

Family guy basically takes the concept from the Simpsons (putting things in cartoons that are controversial) and pushes it as far as it can possibly go.

To anyone saying the simpsons suck now though, I disagree. I saw a great episode the other day, a relatively new one.. and the latest sideshow bob episode. The one where he cuts his face off in jail and switches it with another guys face and moves in next door to the Simpsons. LOL. There was a scene in a car that actually provoked some emotion on me, where he's like "I AM SIDESHOW BOB! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!".. the laugh he does and the way he says it.. and how he has a different face.. it's actually fairly creepy. It had me laughing pretty hard when the story is told, and it shows Bob cutting his face off with a knife while in jail, lol.

In this episode, Bob takes Bart to a place where 5 states meet each other to kill him. I forget which states they were, but there's probably enough evidence to determine which state they live in.

ps. Family guy may have me laughing harder than the other shows, but South Park is just brilliant, and makes me laugh almost as hard as family guy, so SP wins.

If you watch Xavier, you'll realize it's actually put together very well. Nearly every line is a clever pun, and the whole show has plenty of unique underlying plotlines that make things interesting on different levels.
