Default Which of these types of games have you ever played? (Poll closes 14 Dec)

Thanks for the last poll, you guys. Here are the results, if you didn't catch them on my show.

So here's what I want to know...we all play our video games, but what about the other games? Board games, tabletop war, etc. I'd like to know what you all have experienced.

Common Board Game (Monopoly, Clue(do), Scrabble, etc)
Uncommon Board Game (Heroscape, Axis & Allies, Settlers of Catan, etc)
Common Card Game (Texas Hold 'Em, Blackjack, Spades, etc)
Uncommon Card Game (Munchkin, Fluxx, Killer Bunnies, etc)
Common Trading Card Game (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, etc)
Uncommon Trading Card Game (Call of Cthulu, Dark Millennium, Duel Masters, etc)
Common Tabletop RPG (Dungeons & Dragons, GURPS, Pathfinders, etc)
Uncommon Tabletop RPG (Vampire: The Masquerade, Dogs in the Vineyard, Champions, etc)
Common Tabletop Strategy (Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, Lord of the Rings Battle, etc)
Uncommon Tabletop Strategy (Warmaster Ancients, Battlefield Evolution, Hordes, etc)

I've played all but 3 :]

DaGuru, my avatar is a d20 for a reason I'm totally into all this shit lol. I wanted to know about the populous of Fragyard. With the results so far (which, surprisingly, there have been a lot of votes) this is looking REALLY surprising.

So why did it take almost 2 years to even ATTEMPT at tapping into all the other gaming besides video-gaming?

I would assume Phase 10 and Uno would count as common card games, right?

Haven't played most of those games, except for a few obvious board games over the years. Maybe the occasional card game, but rarely. Never been too interested in most of that stuff.

Every now and then I put up threads about 40k, d&d, or MTG. They never end up doing too well, so its not the most common topic. I game on all levels, so I'm always excited when someone who isn't me puts up a thread like that

I played Warhammer 40K when I was younger, Pokemon cards a bit and more recently the occasional board game like Shadows Over Camelot, some fantasy warhammer one where you are all chaos gods trying to infect the land, and some card game where you get cards which change the rules every turn. Also some chess, I assume that counts.
The only non-videogame thing i've played seriously though has been Yugioh cards.

If you are legitimately disappointed there isn't more discussion on the non-video gaming......you can lay most of the blame at Zok's feet as well as some of your own. Considering Zok has been pandering only to an audience of people barely in junior high schol....(instead of the more adult Totse type community)...then of course you won't have many people posting besides snivelling little kids.

And since YOU yourself haven't had the good sense to try to maintain at least SOME level of decent posting on here.....you only have yourself to blame on that note. Many of the games you are discussing are very elaborate, sophisticated, and difficult to play......not too many folks into those kind of genres are going to deal with Snoopy and the Idiot Brigade with their never ending "ur a fag" posts for very long.

Start modding your forum for adults, and adult conversation might be more prevalent.....just an idea.

I understand where you're coming from, and I'm glad you brought that up.

Problem with that is, you can't really choose your audience when you're online. It's not really my choice who my Fragyard members are. Theres nothing stopping a middle-school "raised on 360" type from joining, or an adult bro-gamer to become am member. But you get those, it happens. And one thing I've learned when it comes to talking openly about games like D&D, Magic: The gathering, or Warhammer 40k, people get shy about it. I mean, it's not really their fault, those games are too complicated for some people, and lots of people fear or are angered at what they can't understand. And it's true, Warhammer 40k has a....hold up (gets rulebook)...

303 page rulebook. Also the fact that you have to put one hell of a financial investment into an army, then take the time painting every individual piece. I have about $1200 in my T'au army.

And D&D? Look at this shit:

That's every 4th edition book (NOT including Essentials, which is 4.5ed and Wizards doesnt want to admit it).

Here's Axis & Allies....

...BEFORE any moves are made. That's the 1941 setup.

But actually PLAYING the game, you understand that its worth the investments, in that they're so goddamn FUN.

I mean, yeah, it LOOKS intimidating. Who wouldn't, when being first introduced to these games, be intimidated or overwhelmed? Shit, I was.

Its an unpopular category all over, not just Zoklet. Yeah that's sad, really, I'd love to know more people who were interested in these types of games.

Fact of the matter is, some kids just love playing nothing but Madden, Halo, and CoD all day and choosing not to extend their preferences. At the end of the day, theres no changing that for some people.

And I'm not saying that the only reason some people don't play is because they don't understand. Of course the opportunity to get into it just doesnt reach some people, and that's no ones fault.

For those who ARE into these games, its absolutely amazing, because you can pretty much relate instantly with that person. I can argue all day that artillery units in 40k can or can't occupy a wrecked vehicle and it counts as occupying a building, but its fun, and both parties have fun just talking about it.

In the end, you can't pick your audience. Some people just ARENT into these games, and theres really not a whole lot that can be done about it. For those of us who are, it's always great to know that there are more of us out there who enjoy these types of games.

Also, seriously, if you have any ideas as to how the forum can spread the word about more games like this, let me know! i'm not a shut-in moderator, here. I love hearing from my users. Shoot me a PM and we can make this happen!

Sorry, Xippili...but that is just not true. You can dictate your audience, although when I say "you" please understand that MOST of the responsibility of this conversation goes to your higher ups. Again, if EVERY conversation eventually attracts 4-chan juvenile crap of...."you're a fag"...then that is EXACTLY the audience you'll have at the end of the day. 4-channing punks here only to troll and play games with text.

And there are plenty of people out there as real gamers looking for discussion, one only has to go to a place like boardgamegeek.com and follow their forums. (Funny too, how there ain't no 4-channing crap on there. Amazing how Zoklet fails what every other website can do)

As for attracting other/newer users, that also lies at the feet of the owners as well. I don't know about you, but I don't know of ANY person of any niche of any demographic I would refer to this site....for no other reason then that awkward/embarrasing license plate banner stupidity. I"ve been working on all that for over a year too, so there are parts of this that NOBODY can change Xippili.....and the problems with the site as a whole greatly over-shadow any flaws this particular section has.

Its a shame too, because all the years I've been gaming.....this COULD have been one of my more favorite sections on here.

What, like it's totally srs business? Sure, it's performance art

On another note, watching people play warhammer 40k makes me go in search of snacks, but DnD with the right people is better than tv.

I played all games I could from simple board games, through strategy games (incl WH40k, WHFB and others) to roleplaying games. My favorite RPG system was GURPS, but I started with D&D and then MERP.
I ended up taking it to "the next level" and became a live roleplayer and airsofter and the games, alternative worlds and strange gadgets have always had an impact on my life.
Currently the only game I play actively is WoW.
