Just wondering if anyone has lived or lived there for a period of time and can tell me what its like. Since ever learning German and going once for a school trip i've always wanted to go back and possibly live there but don't really know what its like?
Can you travel around it for say a few months to get a vibe, what are the people like etc etc I have heard great things about the Yearly Oktober fest is it?

German people actually are pretty cool in my experience. Don't bother with stereotypes. Really, though, trying to describe what a country is like is a bit like describing an orgasm. It's best to just experience it yourself. Check out www.wikitravel.org/en/Germany for a good idea of the country and keep in mind that though it's smaller than a few US states it's a very diverse place. The old East area, Bavaria, and North Rhine-Westphalia are all pretty different places to visit.
I stayed in Rhine valley and it was very nice...thanks for the link. Do you know much about the chances of going out there and finding work etc but i guess that would be hard considering my German isn't that great ;(
Know a few people who lived there for years. One girl I know had a boyfriend in the army so she was only on army bases and so on but others lived there properly. They all say it's a really nice place, clean and so on. Only problem is it's full of Germans so if you can handle that...

Ahh good, i have heard good things about it being nice and all that. I guess so, i've met a few Germans who haven't been too bad but i'm sure you can get some right old types. I think i'll have to have a trip there soon.

i think germans are nice, and helpful. though they will be very honest so watch out
one time this girl told me she didnt like my shirt, and that I was a typical American for coming to Germany when I should be going to college. then i was like "wow what a complete snob" and i bitched about her to my friend for the rest of the night. it was a drunken rant about how much i hated her for her making a face at my shirt that's the only german i met that i didnt like
I've stayed in Germany for a month (in Baden-Württemberg) and visited there on three other occasions (been to Berlin, Munich, Koln/Cologne, .
I quite like it. Good points:
1. People tend to be reasonable, open and they speak their mind
2. People don't dislike foreigners
3. Food's good, if you like meat and hearty food
4. Berlin has great nightlife, humour, culture and art
5. Loads of wildlife and natural beauty in the south-east
Bad points
1. In rural areas, it's still hard to be vegetarian
2. It can be very very expensive in places
3. Trains are expensive, as is fuel for private vehicles if you choose to hire one (I'd stick with trains tbh, although they're slightly more expensive than in France or eastern Europe, they're reliable and regular)
4. Jaywalking is a crime and you can get a hefty fine for doing it

This is helpful, thanks man
So would you advise to take public transport rather than get a car / hire?
A car will give you alot more flexibility, but when you're traveling alone public transportation is probably the way to go.
There are alot of highways in germany without a speed limit though
Yeah. If you've not been to Europe before, you'll realise that people aren't slaves to the automobile like they are in the US - you can get along fine without a car unless you live in the middle of nowhere. Public transport is usually excellent everywhere in Europe, both between urban areas and within urban areas. In north-eastern Germany, the bicycle culture is quite strong, so hiring a bike could be a good idea.

Well, your shirt probably was shit and it's extremely typical for Americans to travel Europe before college.
In my own opinion Berlin is probably one of the best places to visit. The city has an amazing nightlife, it's like the place never sleeps. It's also pretty safe in most areas, I was wandering around drunk at about 3am and no one really minded.
In the city public transport is the way to go, it's easy and fast, and not that expensive. Long haul trains can be quite expensive though.
Outside of the cities it's good, but everything is fucking miles away from each other.

my shirt was badass for one thing. and another thing I don't care if it's typical. The reason we do it is because it's fun. People like this girl would have fun too, if she went to America or something but her mind is too closed to accept that Germany isn't the best country in the world im deeply offended

But yeah, visit Berlin, it's awesome.
This is what I've heard too. So I went there, expecting huge parties and stuff and my hostel was filled with 16 year olds getting drunk for their first time. It was really annoying. Then I met these German girls who were also visiting Berlin and they were like "We will party with you tonight." and I was like "sick, finally I'll get to see what everyone has been talking so much about" and then we wondered around, and they wanted to go in this club but the line was huge so we just looked at the Berlin wall and stuff...None of this "nightlife" was found by us, but when I went to visit them in their hometown of Hamburg, I got drunk in public on "the party street" and it was really fun all the stuff we did You can walk around drinking beer in front of the cops on the streets, even bring it on the buses and stuff...nobody cares

im sure it is fun, but its still typical. i find it amusing what you said about her being close minded, people are constantly saying the same thing about americans (swap Germany with US).

also im not trying to offered you.
lulz i didn't mean you offended me, I meant the German girl did. She was a little snot, seriously. I argued with her for like 10 minutes about some schooling system nonsense.
I know they are saying the same thing about Americans, but this girl really was close minded

i hope you didn't spend a lot of time on that, because I don't think anyone is going to read it.
Was she hot though? Also you can walk the streets with beer in Germany?
You can walk in the streets with an open beer all over Europe as a general rule (maybe different in the UK now, I haven't been there for a while). You just have to obey conventions and nobody will bother you (i.e. don't be brown bagging it with some 151 or acting like a jackass). Drinking in public is fine; public drunkenness is not.
Germany is cool. German people are alright, the dudes kinda dress like faggots. German food isn't anything special. If you're near a military post everything is expensive and they'll hustle the fuck outta you.

yeah she was pretty hot actually its funny my friend who was there with me thought she was cool, and I was super drunk by the end of the night and I was like "dude she was a total bitch what the fuck are you talking about" anyways I ended up spilling water all over his school work and stuff that night cause I was drunk. I felt bad but that's what you get when you start up a conversation about schooling systems at a fucking bar in Germany
oh and yeah you can get drunk in the streets, it's perfectly fine. I'm still not 21 so I'm used to keeping my drink kinda low if I'm around people who can get me in trouble. It's weird to just walk in the open, drinking who knows what and asking a cop a question and him wishing you a fun night
My friend brought it up, cause he wanted to seem smart in front of the girl.. I don't know anything about the school system there, sorry. I also never went to a football game unfortinately. I don't know if I am the best person to ask, I was only there for like 10 days. I DO know there is huge competetion with the teams though. I really want to go to one now... I always hear people singing for their team hella loud in the train stations and stuff, so you know they take their sports very seriously over there One of my friends who lives over there always talked about it and pointed out where they practice and stuff
If you're an EU citizen yeah, you can get work anywhere within in the EU. If you're from outside of Europe then it might be hard to get legal permission to work. It varies from country to country so it's something you'll need to research elsewhere.
Well I'm inside the EU so I guess thats not a problem but I thought quite a lot of Germany spoke good English? I know they get taught it early at school.
Well yeah, a lot of them speak English better than a lot of English people. But that doesn't mean you've got legal permission to work in Germany!
I've got work in France before and I can barely speak French at all (or at least, I couldn't before I started). Depends what kind of work you're willing to do and who's willing to employ you.

the kids speak english, but the older adults...not so much at least in my experience. you can tell who the slackers are in school, cause they know less english than everyone else

english are for phaggotts. german > english.

One of the main reasons I want to go is to better my German...how long do you think you need to be in a country before you start picking up the language? I have learnt some Germany but noting in-depth.
