Interested in launching a website

I'd like to start up a website with a very basic design. Something that thrives on user-submitted material, so that hopefully the site eventually runs itself. I'm talking about a site like fmylife.com and dearblankpleaseblank.com.

Essentially I'd love to make a site that I could hope take off successfully like the above sites with very simple outlines. Please don't turn this into a thread of whether this is something I'd be successful or not, it's just something I'd like to attempt.

Anyways, can someone tell me what language is used to make a site like the above ones? I know very basic HTML, and would be willing to get into other web development codes to eventually make a simple site. And maybe post some websites with good tutorials? This is obviously something I would need to practice quite a lot and realistically would take a while to accomplish, I realize this. Just wondering if you guys can set me on the right track.

you're probably best off googling "introduction to php" or whatever other coding things there are. I'm sure the best ones would have the most hits on google..

Lots of different languages you could use, and any sort of "ajax" coding is really sought after nowadays, but there's a lot to learn, and even then you'll only be good at technical stuff. You also need to attract users to start off with and a load more things I'm forgetting about. I'd rip a few site's source apart, although the actual work is all done server-side now.

It's called Wordpress. And it looks like that second site runs on it, or at least something similar to it.

If you can get away with using an already-made CMS like Wordpress/Drupal/Joomla, it would be best to spend your time learning CSS and Javascript, while brushing up on your HTML.

PHP would be the way to go. Just use PHP to process the user input and store it in a MySQL database.
