survival horror
Can someone here recommend me some survival horror games or some detective games or something like that? I like games which involve puzzles and being vulnerable and having limited weapons and ammo. Like Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Siren, D, etc. Please no futuristic shit. Thank you.

Re: survival horror
Penumbra: Overture, or as mafiabro suggested, Amnesia. Also, the old Alone in the Dark games were great, though that might be rose-tinted glasses considering I played them when I was 6-10.
The Seventh Guest was an oldschool point'n'click detective game, if graphics don't mean shit to you, look it up. Phantasmagoria might be up the same alley as well, sierra studios, written by Roberta Jordan, of King's Quest fame.
There's also The Suffering, Fatal Frame, System Shock 2 (You said no Sci-fi, I know, but it's a great game), House of the Dead series... I'll be back with more as they come to me. Let me know how far from your tastes I am.
Edit: Sanitarium! That was an awesome game right there, Starts off cliche, but it's crescendo is bloody fantastic. You're an amnesiac (Yeah, I know... ) in an asylum, during a huge riot. You get abducted by an angel, taken to a town of only children, and thrown into the game to try and piece together what the fuck is going on.

I highly recommend everything that's been mentioned in this thread. If you like RPG elements, Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are wonderful. Also, Stalker.

Seconded for Deus Ex and System Shock 2, play them on the hardest difficulty and it feels like any other survival horror game where you only get health once every 2 hours.

Re: survival horror
I approve of this thread.
Got bored since my xbox 360 died, and started digging thru a box of all the used computer crap that my uncle gave me for my birthday when i was like 14. One of the games happened to be Sanitarium. Its definitely a throwback. The shitty graphics and stuff are quite endearing.
But yeah- survival/horror is my favorite genre. I've actually been trying to design a concept for a survival horror board game that I could adapt into a game. I wish with all my might that they make a new Fallout type game based in that genre. I loved how open and expansive the world in Fallout 3 was, and finding all sorts of odds and ends, and using them to repair and make better weapons. My weapon creation system would try to be a little more comprehensive. The gun customization system in Hitman:Blood Money was cool. But you'd be able to collect things like wooden planks, nails, screws, duct tape, pipes, wire, betteries propane canisters, stocks, ammunition etc to make things. You could like find a broken telescope or watch face, tape, sand paper or whatever, and improvise basically a 4x scope that improves crit hits/head shots. Haha ive obviously thought about this a lot. And then a lot of the materials you can use to build outposts- save houses- in different parts of the world, and populate them with survivors that you find, and are able to train and arm and armor completely. As dear as zombies are to my heart, I would try to stay away from that. I'm thinking maybe a nerve gas attack or something, so that to get some items when you dont have gas mask filters or something, you end up having to sacrifice one of the survivors...which changes people's opinion of you. Basically you'd be building a little guerilla army. I liked the recruitment thing in Portable ops. Also <3 Metal gear. Not survival HORROR, but definitely fits the scarcity requisite. Snake eater was unique. There would be different combinations to make the same item, but different ones would be more effective, a la Oblivion. for instance a lot of different stuff like gasoline, paint thinner, saw dust, styrofoam, could be used to make molotovs, but one recipe would do higher damage. Broken mop handle+ duct tape+ paring knife= simple spear. Propane tank+ broken glass+ M-80= bunkerbuster. straight Pipe D (long)+ straight pipe D (short)+ pipe cap= Poor quality scattergun. You get the idea.
tl;dr- I LAKA DAH ZOMBEHS
Resident Evil 4 was pretty extraordinary. Dead Space was another good one...although you said no futuristic shit. Meh.

Re: survival horror
F.E.A.R.
It had an intense psychological element, Japanese horror elements and the most interesting gunplay I've ever seen in a game. Just don't start with 2 or 3, because they suck balls compared to F.E.A.R. 1

The gameplay was good, but there was ammo saturation and the limited storage space was annoying.

On harder difficulties, there was less ammo. And the storage space was a lot more realistic than the shit they had going in Res 5. The level design and stuff of 5 was so involved and stuff it was awesome. Too bad you had the stupid black chick running into executioner's axes and stuff, and the EXTREME oversaturation of ammo. It kind of eliminates the tension when theres a horde of infected natives advancing on me, and I whip out my grenade launcher and 620 Napalm rounds...

Though I still have no idea what it's about even after playing and beating it dozens of times.

I know they've already been said, but I have to echo the Clock Tower and Fatal Frame (Project Zero is the other name) series, especially the latter. FF: Crimson Butterfly is one of the scariest games EVER.

Thanks for the contribution, asshole. Personally, I can't really think of anything else that hasn't been touched on. I think this genre is ripe for profit, and if some developer would take the time to make a true classic survival/horror game, it could be huge. IMO, the best we have is the early Silent Hill games. I'd settle just for next gen remakes.

I wouldn't call The Suffering a survival horror, the ammo in the game was quite abundant and when you transform you are just able to rip the living shit outta everything. A horror game definitely, but far from a survival one. Action sounds more likely.

Re: survival horror
I just wanted to add, I picked up Alan Wake recently, it's awesome. It's got the cool narration of max payne (and the same writer, sam lake), just the right mixture of suspense and release and a deceptively simple battle mechanic. I give it 5 stars.

That's because for some retarded reason they only released it on gamecube. I think it could have been huge if it had been a cross-platform game, but no, the retarded developers only released for the system known for its family oriented games.
