Want to Do: My own server/domain/forum

I'm looking into creating a private forum on my own server on one of my own computer. I've googled around a fair bit on this subject, interested in knowing if anyone has experience in this field?

Traffic won't be too high, 200 people MAX, and no more then 30 people on at once.

What type of cost's am I looking at?
I'm planning on using pirated software.
I have no bandwidth cap.

You don't need to pirate any software, really. There is plenty of great free software out there to get the job done.

Get a WAMP (Windows), LAMP (Linux) or similar stack for HTTP, SQL and PHP and the install something like phpBB. Done.

I think you're going to need to sign up with a dynamic dns service to get the domain to point to your server. Then you can either go the WAMP or the LAMP route depending on whether you want linux or windows. Then pirate bulletin from a place like vbteam.info (currently down).

Go LAMPP if you can. WAMPP and XAMPP both have security holes. If you don't mind pirating software, pick up a copy of Vbulitin. It's really the industry standard. Failing that phpBB is the best free product out there.

You should fork over the $10 bucks for a domain, but if you're running everything off your own servers, your only expense is going to be electricity.
