It's a great film camera. All the controls you need to learn and lots of cheap, decent glass out there.

Re: Best camera for $100 or less?
The K1000 Is a beast, It's awesome, It has a reputation of being totally awesome back in the day and now as well.
Unfortunately, too often people want to try selling their beat to shit cameras with no recent servicing and broken light meters for well over 100 bucks
I've followed k1000's on ebay Usually they start at like 30 bucks and they get driven up above the 100 mark JUST Because it's a K1000.
Old vivitars, Ricohs, and Chinons Use the same K mount, great cheap glass and actually have more features.
Don't be afraid to pick up a spotmatic, I have a couple and they're great cameras, The great part is that For the most part, Spotmatics are dirt cheap, and their lenses are too, quick tip, the SP500 doesn't actually have a 1/500 sec shutter limit, it goes up to 1/1000 but pentax didn't Put that on the dial for some reason. HOWEVER, spotmatics use the screwmount M42 lenses, and aren't compatible with Kmount lenses, But if you go this route, you can upgrade to a k mount body later on and use all your glass with an adapter.
- I personally wouldn't trust ebay, but if the price is right Go for it man, Just make sure everything works before putting your money on it. If they say something like "no batteries, so I didn't test the meter" click out of it, A repair like that would cost something like 60 bucks
Zenits and Prakticas are also badass simple cameras, their kit lens is great and it's pretty cool to have a camera made in the USSR or GDR these were made mostly in m42 mounts but Zenits also made K mount cameras after 1990 or something like that
These can be had for like..... 20-30 bucks

Re: Best camera for $100 or less?
Honestly, I recommend just buying one of the new smartphones. I have a Droid X, which has an 8MP camera with autofocus, dual LED flash, can record 720p HD video, has an HDMI hookup, editing software on it and the ability to instantly share it using social networking/remote storage/bluetooth, plus you will always have it on you (iits a cell phone afterall), it does everything and anything a phone and computer is capable of these days and its fucking useful as a motherfucker. Small too. Any good smartphone comes with a 5MP or better camera these days, so if you have an upgrade coming up, pull the trigger on a top-tier smartphone.

It would be nice to have something I don't need to plug in every day...
