Default Potassium permanganate exothermic reactions

Glycerine and ethylene glycol react with K2MnO4 so exothermically that the reactants burst into flames after a while. Why is this? Is it the -OH groups? If I mixed potmang (bout time someone gave it a short name) with sugar will the same thing happen?

Took a second for it to ignite, but yes, it does.

That fast? Gonna try this myself, only have brown sugar but if its that reactive, some molasses shouldn't interfere.

I mixed some potmang up with brown sugar and no reaction happened. BungHole did you powderise the sugar first?

I just quench it with water but I like the idea of using fridge gases to cool things down. Can you buy them OTC?

Yeah, I ground it on a stone slab. But I have to admit, I cheated. I was using it for pyrotechnic mixes on New Years, and it had some sulfur and magnesium powder in it. I'm sure that helped. It was sitting on my desk next to a bottle of permanganate, so I just mixed some and dripped water on it real quick.

I have heard of sugar and KMnO4 mixes igniting when wet from a few places though. Also, if you use the same stone to grind the sugar and the permanganate, you can hear popping and smell burning sugar. The stuff is pretty sensitive.

Let me try it with some granulated sugar and then some powdered (both pure, this time).

EDIT: Okay, just took a teaspoon of granulated sugar(straight from the bag), and a teaspoon of KMnO4. I slowly dripped a few drops of water on it. After about ten or fifteen seconds, it starts steaming and foaming. I add more water and it boils like mad. Definitely an exothermic reaction.

As far as the heat being able to ignite the dry portion of the mixture, I'm not sure. Needs more control. Let me weigh some out and make an oxygen balanced mixed.

EDIT2: Mixed up one gram of sugar with three grams of KMnO4. I dripped about 1 ml of water onto the mix. After about twenty seconds, it spewed out large amounts of steam. The sugar is definitely oxidizing, but there isn't any actual ignition or flames, just steam CO2 and heat.
