I posted this in a thread on totse and just wanted to let people know the real truth behind his famous speech which was completely taken out of context.
He was warning against the press revealing sensitive information which the Russians could use to their advantage. This was during the cold war I believe. Sadly it has been taken out of context to fit into whatever views conspiracy theorists might have.
"The Soviet way of secrecy benefited the Soviet's national security at the expense of a closed Soviet society. The US was an open and free society but this put the US at a disadvantage with the enemy Soviets because those Soviets were gaining valuable intelligence from our open press. The US had a weakness compared to the Soviets in that the US press was free to use the First Amendment under the Constitution to announce any news, some news which was affecting national security."
