There are ways to get through this. Many survivalists all over the World use faraday cages to protect delicate electronics and drive old Toyota 4x4´s that aren´t voulnerable like modern cars with electronic ignition.
I´m considering a small faraday cage just for the most important appliances, like PMR radios, laptop and cell phone (just in case the net gets up and running again).

Also this measure is not solely against solar radiation (solar flares/storms) but just as important against EMP attacks.

The thing is that the Sun "pulses". There are short and long solar cycles where the Sun is less or more active in terms of sunspots, solar flares and storms. The short cycle seems to be around 7 years and there is no general consensus on the the long term cycles, but here are historical recordings of almost 200 years of major solar events. In modern terms we talk of "Solar max" as the most active time in the period and we are comming up on Solar Max 24

As far as I can tell some of the worst effects that could potentially damage modern society has been power surges. Some records tell of several hundreds of volts increase in power-lines. Depending on how it is received it could knock out powerplants and fry delicate electronics = internet. In Canada millions of people were without power for days in the 80's due to a solar storm. Worst case no internet and power, best case awesome aurora borealis!
