Actually I have been studying military history and archeology for years and have practical and theoretical knowledge of metalworking. Making anything "from the land" requires something that is more valuable than money (for me at least) - time. As MMID said, you clearly know it all already, but I will waste a little time on clarifying

You need to construct a forge. You can find clay, sand and horse manure "off the land" but you will need to build bellows. I guess your next step is to kill a cow, skin it and treat the skin. Here you will need knives and other tools as well as tannic acid. Once you have the leather for the bellows you also need wooden planks. Now you go to "the land" and cut down a tree with your homemade stone axe. Once it falls you split the trunk into planks and plane one of them with your homemade stone planer since you dont have your forge yet. Then cut the wood to shape with your razor sharp fingers and finish up your bellows around the tube you made from... arghhh.
Once you have your forge and bellows done you start gathering that iron; "I have access to similar iron sources as those in ancient japan..". What kind is that again?? When the ore is gathered you build a furnace, gather the wood and get it burning at the right temperature. Then you have your iron ingots ready for work.
Now starts the work you are asking about. You start shaping the bars/pieces and welding them together with no personal experience and knowledge gained solely from youtube videos etc.
So buying one for
$18.48 is hardly considered "a lot of money", but most likely the only way you will EVER get yourself a grabbeling hook.

Btw I already said I'm not a climber, but that's irrelevant, you're just grasping at straws. I came here for advice yes, but I did listen to some of it. Some of it was detailed.

I am in no way "grasping at straws", but I am however a climber

Aid climbing (= climbing on gear rather than surfaces) is one of the most technically challenging types of climbing requiring the highest amount of safety measures. The only people who would ever trust their lives to a grabbeling hook are burglers.

Telling someone "dur duuuuhh durrr u cant do dat cuz itz not modernz hur hur huh ur stupidz!1!!1111111" isn't giving someone advice. It's just being a know it all dipshit that has no decent advice to give because they're only here to attempt to look superior.

I´m a nice and helpful guy and posted at first only to try to prevent you from cracking your skull after falling from your DIY hook. The thread took a turn and now I´m posting to actually try to give you insight in blacksmithing. I´m guessing that you really want a grabbeling hook and therefore I provide what I think is the most realistic solution to you. I would think that if your interest was in learning blacksmithing and how to weld and forge you wouldn´t focus on a hook, but rather try to learn the craft by making smaller and easier things like horse shoes and knives and work your way up.
