It's definitely, without doubt, unequivocally, a game called, Defenders. It was released by Williams Electronics in 1980, and it featured ground-breaking 2D graphics. Extremely addictive.
The game is so amazing you'd have to play it for yourself to see what I'm talking about. Defenders was at least 20 years ahead of its time. Check out this vid of a player playing it...

Dune 2 was RTS. Felt a lot like Red Alert to me. Dune 1, you played as Paul and it was fairly true to the book. Most action was point and click, but there was a heavy strategy/management element as well.
