How does a lazy man cure bud?
I'm not really lazy, I just like automation. Give me a repetitive task like shaking a silkscreen to make hash and I'll build something to do it for me. (wish I could automate a skilled trim...)
So maybe I don't like the thought of opening a dozen jars for an hour a day for 30 days... and hoping that I don't mold it up. What should I build?
Here's my thoughts...
[1] a chamber, sized to crop yield, sporting a computer fan relayed to...
[2] a 24vac humidistat
If I got the wiring right and could maintain a specific and steady humidity inside the chamber, would my bud cure properly? Is there anything else I can add to the chamber to enhance the curing process?
I plan on using a honeywell humidistat and a 24vac transformer $35 for both... if it's even possible to cure bud like this, I fear it might dry too quickly. Any thoughts?

Re: How does a lazy man cure bud?
drying and cureing are two very seperate stages. it took me a couple mold issues before i got that down too.
Basically by the time you jar it, it should be DRY. buds should be cunchy on the outside.
(your smaller stuff may be crunchy all the way through, but don't worry too much about that, once they're jarred the residual moisture will spread evenly)
The usual mistake and it's one that's easy to make is to jar it too early, and spend the next week with the tops off your jars for half a day at a time finishing the dry, before you even begin curing. (i picked up that dessicant we were talking aboutt he other day, let you know in a week or so how that works out.)
you don't need to do it for 30 days, more like a week tops until you're dry all the way through. That's when your cure really starts, once the humidity is low enough that mold is no longer a worry. Best thing to do at that point is stick them in a closet and forget about them for a week at a time, coming back only to rotate once in awhile.
so it's more like a week of airing daily, a week of airing every couple days and then leave them alone until they're perfect.
You definitly CAN make the chamber and all that, and it would be cool to make..but don't make the entire process more difficult on yourself than you have to.

Re: How does a lazy man cure bud?
I see what you're talking about. I'm curing my bud in gallon-sized cookie jars with temp/humidity meters thrown in and it's such peace of mind knowing when mold can and can't grow.
They go up to 60% r/h after being closed all night, I open them for a few hours till they get to 50%, then close them again. Thing is, bud in the middle feels warm and moist when I open the jars but no humidity on the glass. I can't wait to taste properly cured sensimilla that I worked hard for, hope I'm doing it right.

Re: How does a lazy man cure bud?
warm and moist is no good, that's prime breeding temps, make sure they feel nice and dry before you cap them again. I've never sen moisture actually on the jar itself.
(oh and keep them in a dark place of course, light + water=mold.)
water by itself just gives mold spores a chance to get established.
that warm moist feeling is what i mean by them "sweating" once jarred.
It won't kill you, but it's not a good thing. you have that humidity monitor on top...or down in the middle?

Re: How does a lazy man cure bud?

This is after being jarred all night in a closet, not so sweaty this morning. They're actually a little cool and springy. Humidity meter is buried on the bottom. They've only been in there about 3 days now. I'll give them a few hours open today and maybe fall back to every other day after that.
I was under the impression that mold won't grow under 60% rh?
Smells powerful.

Re: How does a lazy man cure bud?
hmm..that looks like the one i used to use for my room, does it measure max/min humidity peaks as well? just keep an eye on it and you should be fine. After coming up with moldy buds a couple times i got paranoid.

Re: How does a lazy man cure bud?
I've got a big wet bud I need dry in FOUR days. Trimming it and breaking it down, then drying it in the boot of an old car in the sun until i need it.

Lazy men cure pot by throwing it in paper bags for a while. Works just fine.
You people are putting way too much work into being lazy.

I would never spend months of hard work to skimp out on one of the most important steps.
Threads like this blow my mind.
Theres one way to do things. The right way.
