Rollback miles.
Lets not move this into a bad ideas...hear me out now.
The fact of the matter is, i have a car with a broken gage, it shows that i have 240 000 miles on my car, now the car is a peace of shit, but it has 160 000 on it tops. It is a 95 corolla with a regular odometer(not an electronic one), i use it as a work car, the last week or so i been thinking about selling it. I know that no one in their right mind will buy the car with that many miles on it.
So here is the question, if i put a new gage in there, how could i roll the miles to around 160 000, or better yet, how could i turn the 240 000 into 160 000. On the title it says 110 000, and it was about 6 month ago.
If you have a manual, or a link that i could use, it would be greatly frikking appreciated.
Google has failed me, but i thank Zokle in advance, because i know it will not.

I'll leave you with a hint. You think automakers didnt think of gauge-swapping?

Re: Rollback miles.
Prop up the back tyres and run the car in reverse.
Since it has had so many kilometres on the cable registering forwards, you'll need to run it for a similar amount in reverse before the odometer ticks backwards.
Understand?

Re: Rollback miles.
You could try the reverse approach, but I doubt that will work. Most odometers (yes, even the mechanical ones) in recent years will clock forward mileage whether going forward or reverse.
I have to wonder how the thing got 'broke' so that it racked up so many miles???
Regardless, things do break and there must be some way of repairing or replacing them. My suggestion would be to check with a dealer/mechanic to see what the procedure is, physically and legally to fix an odometer. You might also want to check with the DMV to see if they have any suggestions. I checked on the CO DMV site, but came up empty on the odometer issue, other than a comment about the reading on the title.
Sorry to not be of much help, but again... you cannot be the only person who has ever had an odometer malfunction.

Re: Rollback miles.
Well if you really want to, you can pop the dash out and gain access to the odometer its easy as turning the numbers to make it what ever you want. BUT!
If your gonna sell the car with 160,000 miles on it how much are you expecting to get? Your better off being honest and telling them the odometer is broken, your Bill of Sale and Title from when you bought the car should have the correct millage on it before it broke right? Explain to the purchaser that in the amount of time since you have bought it you haven't driven it 100,000+ miles what ever it states on your Title.
Often when a car engine is replaced or rebuilt the odometer isin't set back because the Trans/Other parts still have that many miles on it. It really depends on the condition and running order of the car. Don't sell it to some asshole whose going to fight you about the miles, remember its still your car until papers are signed.
Give craigslist a try if its available in your area, people looking for cars on craigslist wont be deterred by high miles, they either want a cheap car, don't know jack shit about cars, or they know exactly whats up.

Re: Rollback miles.
Go look for a similar Corolla in a scrapyard with lower miles on the odometer, and swap out the instrument panel.
Thats what I did in my Polo, went from 132,000 to 87,000 miles in about half an hour.
For the record, I wasn't being surreptitious, it was an instrument panel from a Polo GT and hence had a rev-counter, which my crappy, bottom of the range, 1-litre didn't have.
EDIT: Eeeeee, I mis-spelt "rev-counter" and "rev-cunter." Made me chuckle anyway......

Re: Rollback miles.
Do what Munky said.
A Corolla should last more than 250,000 miles with good maintenance, anyway. Mine is 20 years old and there it literally nothing wrong with it. Everything works, there's no rust, it's not too slow, and very comfortable. Excellent car. Boring, but excellent.

Re: Rollback miles.
If its a mechanical set up you can take it apart and reset the mileage.
Its not like its a swiss watch.
Just be careful.

Ahh, unfortunately I didn't start my driving career with Rover's. My first car was a '91 Polo CL coupe, 1.05 litre.

Mine was a 91' CL too. Except it had 1.3 litres of raw powah, bitch!
It was actually one a few with the G40's engine minus the centrifugal supercharger. Apparently in the last months of its production they used that block and head...which was a pain as I had to buy two Haynes manuals, one for the car and the GT edition for the engine.
Since some gauges are sealed with silver solder to prevent tampering, changing it out with a different one is the best option. If it's under the mileage you want, wind it forward with an electric drill.

Haha, that trick stopped working in the 70's. Otherwise if you were serious..newfag.
Since it's mechanical; you just find one from the same car; e.g. ebay or such and buy it and swap it in and make sure the cable that plugs into the odometer does NOT get ripped when you take out the dash since it is delicate cable and thats it.
There is no protection against that besides the screws holding it in place and possibly the steering wheel.
Do not try to modify your current odometer without a replacement; you will fail since it is pretty bitchy to do!

It's not fool-proof. When it was time to turn in one of our old Suburbans, my dad rolled back the odometer about 5000 miles so we wouldn't have to pay extra fees. I haven't really gotten around to asking him about how he did it since I don't know specifically how the silver lines show up if rolled back.
It's actually interesting how the odometer will still drive the numbers forward even if you drive in reverse. At least with GM cars and I'm certain all manufacturers did it the same way back then, but in the late 70's or so GM went with small rotors that would generate a variable-frequency AC voltage depending on how fast you were travelling. Because the sine wave is symmetric, both forward and backward will generate an equivalent voltage. In the mid 80's, GM moved to a newer sensor that used the Hall Effect to tell when teeth on a reluctor wheel moved past the sensor.

Re: Rollback miles.
When I swapped the 85 MPH speedo for the 120 MPH one I have in there now I bent out the side of the gauge so I could pull out the worm gear (cylindrically shaped gear) so I could synchronize the milage on the new gauge with the old one, then I bent it back. The gauge has worked perfectly since I did this (over a year ago) although my car is from 78 so this might be more difficult on a newer vehicle.
