Default Obama administration announced it will not release Bin Laden photos

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011...en-photos-raid

Quote:
Barack Obama has blocked publication of gruesome pictures of Osama bin Laden's corpse, expressing concern that they might incite extremists to retaliate.

But Reuters, in a release not authorised by the US government, distributed disturbing pictures of three other men killed at Bin Laden's Pakistan hideout.

Obama, in an interview with CBS to be broadcast at the weekend, explained why he opted against publication of the Bin Laden picture. "It is important for us to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence," the president said.

Some, including within his own cabinet, had argued in favour of publication as proof that the al-Qaida leader was dead. But Obama said that even if the photos were published, there would still be those who would deny it. "The fact of the matter is you won't see Bin Laden walking on this earth again," the president said.

Security in New York and Washington, as well as at US bases and embassies around the world, has been stepped up to cover the event of any al-Qaida revenge attack.

The debate over the pictures came after a difficult 48 hours for the White House, forced on to the defensive for offering conflicting accounts of the raid on Abbottabad which raised questions about the legality of the killing...
Wow, so any huge approval rating spike he received because of this just deflated. Maybe he doesn't give a fuck about the political victory this could have became. I hope someone leaks it soon.

Sad to say, I'm legitimately surprised at this.

Hey guys lets not release osama's death photos because it'll make the terrorists mad! We have been fighting these people and trying to find osama for 10 years, and when we finally achieved this goal, we would rather not insult or aggravate the terrorists, because they gon' be mad!

Isn't Obama such a kind, compassionate president? He has a love for all people, and wants us all to be free of the bonds of oppression and war. We don't need to see the pictures, right? Go back to sleep america. Your government has got it all under control. We love you, and we're trying to keep you safe. We don't like trophies or showing off, so we'll keep the death photoes to ourselves so it doesn't aggrevate the terrorists any further. We killed him, though, don't worry. Go back to sleep america

They only get mad if you show pictures of the corpse. They're okay with being bombed and attacked for 10 years, and don't even mind that much when american people are dancing in the street after killing one of their leaders. They're cool with us telling them what they can and cannot do.

But goddamn do not show them a picture of their dead leader

Reminds me of the Birth Certificate. Obama is either a huge cunt and control freak, or just a simple fraud. My money is on the latter.

he's trying to get everyone to forget about the whole birth certificate deal..

"oh but obama killed osama! He's a great president after all, a true american. How dare those people accuse him of hiding his birth certificate? Clearly he loves america and the free world and all he wants is to help us. Put your blind trust in him now, he's shown us that he is a true american hero"

Stop pretending they don't have a point in regards to the photos being used as a recruitment tool. They do. Photos like that have been used as a recruitment tool for these groups in the past. The photos of Abu Ghraib, for instance, where used as a recruitment tool. And those were regular fighters; not a extremist icon like bin Laden.

You might say that they should release the photos in spite of that - that's a perfectly reasonable argument to make - but using your shitty sarcasm to gloss over the facts is stupid.

With that being said, the photos of abu ghraib are more disturbing than a photo of osama with a bullet in his head, In my opinion at least.

Obviously the terrorists are pissed no matter what, they're fucking terrorists! The witholding of such a historical photo is highly irresponsible and suspect. Even my 89 year old grandma is dubious as to whether they killed Osama because of this compounded with the burial at sea.

Get this conspiracy crap out of your heads.

America was already shown dancing in the streets after the announcement, literally getting drunk on ground zero. How horrible is that?

Can you imagine what the public would do with these photos? Photoshop, jokes, more celebration and stupidity.

This is a delicate situation and I feel they are handling it well. You want the photos released because of a farfetched conspiracy.

And as for this blowing his shot at re-election, are you retarded? Do you honestly think this will blow his approval ratings down? The whole country, I assume and hope, isn't full of theorists claiming he is alive.

I never said it would blow his shot at re-election. How could I know that, it's fucking months away. I'm not retarded, but you're an admittedly shit troll, so here we go. What I said is based off what I've gathered from talking to my normal American friends and relatives, and for a lesser part, Zoklet. I've found that quite a few people are really surprised that the photo isn't being released. I think that most will still believe that Osama bin Laden was killed, but not releasing the photo will only feed the conspiracy dicks and annoy others so any approval ratting spike he may have garnered with this is going to be lessened without the photos.

I'm sorry if i've offended your mainstream media view of this situation, but i don't buy obama's shit.

If terrorists want to train new recruits, they're going to do it with or without the fucking photo. They sure as hell aren't going to stop what theyre doing in absence of said photo...

No one is asking to see his corpse for pleasure/justice, it's just a good way to tell if someone is dead or not.

Nobody said they couldn't train new recruits without the photo. The issue here is that they will undoubtedly use it as a recruitment tool. They can. All other photos such as similar to that one (i.e Abu Grahib or other leaders killed in bombings) have been used to recruit even more people to their side than they would do normally.

Like I said, you can insist that the administration should still provide the photo. That's reasonable. Pretending like the photo wouldn't be used as a recruitment tool, however, is just plain silly.

Video from the moon is a good way of to tell if someone landed on the freaking moon. Guess what? Conspiracy theorists still don't believe it. A picture isn't going to convince them.

I would agree in the sense that one shows a severe mistreatment of people, where as the other one can say shows a justified retribution. But at the end of the day, those individual soldiers are worth less in their eyes than Osama was. Osama was their hero. In that sense, the photo of Osama is worth far more.

The president has more to think about than conspiracy dicks. Releasing that damn picture would put people's lives at risk and ensure that the fundies get new volunteers for their shenanigans. End of discussion.

I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, however that Obscured character just doesn't seem quite right to me. Next thing you know he'll be sending letters to the editor demanding the right to "examine" the bodies of the people in the obituary, all in the name of "transparency" of course. It could be used as a recruitment tool, but think about it this way:

We have already killed him, right? We killed their leader, their jesus, their savior, their whatever. Isn't that enough to recruit people?

Have you seen the videos of the americans cheering and partying because osama is dead? Wouldn't that be considered salt on the wound? That would make the extremists pretty fucking pissed if you ask me. Saying that one simple photo would somehow put lives in danger is an overstatement.

We have already done so much, and when you really think about it would the photo make any difference at at? As if they don't have enough recruitment tools already.
