Russia's Winter Olympics slips into controversy over 'Nazi images'



A promotional campaign linked to the 2014 Winter Olympics is stirring debate in Russia because of its use of allegedly "fascist" imagery.

The campaign employs images of blue-eyed, blond sportsmen and women which have been described by critics as "neo-Hitlerite" and "like something from a Leni Riefenstahl film".

Images of an Aryan-looking snowboarder and an ice-skater gazing into the middle distance dominate giant billboards in Moscow and feature on the cover of brochures to advertise Gorky Gorod, an elite housing complex being built at Krasnaya Polyana near Sochi on Russia's Black Sea coast. The complex is a private-public partnership which will be the Olympic media village at the 2014 Games.

"Without doubt the authors of this advertising were inspired by Nazi art," said Ekaterina Degot, a well-known art historian and former curator at the State Tretyakov Gallery.

Those fake Slavs, who I was talking about, look nothing like whites. Anyway. This is what I said last time around:

The poster's design language is undoubtedly inspired by the romantic-realist style used in posters from Nazi Germany (anyone who says 'I don't see any Nazi connection in that image' obviously hasn't seen any Nazi art either) - that's fine in itself, it's just art after all, and it's a nice image that suggests the kind of lifestyle that potential clientèle associate themselves with. The design company uses swastikas in their other designs, too, and if that is just for aesthetic reasons, then that's okay with me (although I can see how it would offend people). The design company also associates closely with a known fascist - again, presumably only aesthetically rather than politically.

I think I'm right in saying that racism/ultra-right wing political views are common in Russia's nouveau riche. The company are probably (hopefully) just being shrewd in using an aesthetic that suggests sympathy with fascism.

It's unfortunate that such a market exists in the first place, though. As a designer, using Nazi iconography or a nazi-themed aesthetic wouldn't bother me per se, but were it directed specifically at known fascists (which is plausible in this case), then it's not something I would support.

Basically it boils down to 'I think it looks like a Nazi poster and I don't think that's good//I designed it to look like a Nazi poster and I don't care'

Actually the poster's style remind me of the old Soviet Union propaganda posters.

But regardless I don't think it's in a style of nazi posters. Mostly because there were multiple styles of Nazi posters that existed. Just do a google image search of nazi posters and you'll see what I mean.
