MGS3 had the dumbest bosses. That dude in the space suit? Wtf? That was so retarded.
The End makes up for all of the uninspired bosses in MGS3, which I will admit was full of those kinds of bosses. The Pain was the most ridiculous, imo.

I thought the most rediculous boss was the Fear. I remember seeing that cut scene before you fight him. He dislocated his limbs and crawls up the tree on his back side. I was like
To be honest, I still haven't played more than 10 minutes of MGS4.
I rate MGS3: Subsistence ever so slightly higher than MGS1 because of it's superior gameplay and level design, and because the story and all the little details came together just so. Sure some of the boss fights didn't tickle my fancy, but some of them did enough to completely make up for it. Plus I loved the different ways you could go through it, just rambo your way through and murder everyone or sneak through undetected - or a bit of both, setting traps and taking down guards one by one. And acquiring the stealth camo
It's definitely not impossible to go through the game undetected, you just have to pay attention to the patterns the guards go through. It's a little annoying there's no quick way to reload a game when you make a mistake, but it doesn't take many attempts to get it right.
MGS1 comes next, the first game in the series I played and still a favorite. The story is brilliant and the atmosphere is perfect, and the gameplay suits its level design well. I didn't like Twin Snakes as much - I don't like the lack of a decent control layout similar to that of the PS version, I don't like the redone and forced sounding new voices, and some of the new scenes are almost too over the top. More to the point, the updated gameplay killed any of its challenge, it was just too easy. The graphics had lost some of the character the original had, it almost looked bland, and overall I found it was a rather pointless update. The original didn't need updating, it was perfect as is already. Sure it looks dated now, but that just doesn't matter to me.
MGS2 was... okay. Not so good these days, the Tanker mission is regrettably short and Raiden doesn't make for the greatest of protagonists, though I did like the sword fighting near the end which was also frustratingly short. Some of the story didn't make sense at all, it took one left turn too many and simply spiralled out of control.
I didn't like the level design. Just too repetitive, and bland. I enjoyed it at the time but MGS3 made Sons of Liberty embarrassing to play these days.
I can imagine someone getting killed by him so many times that they forget about the game for a while and then come back to a message that he has died of old age
Apparently also if you save and leave the game for a couple of days but less than a week, the end sneaks up on you.

MGS4 is my favorite, no doubt. I got 11 plays out of it. each of them worth every second. one of the few games I've done everything there is to do in (Resident Evil 4 being another). 2nd to that is probably MGS2. it's just really hard for me to say. 2 and 4 are sort of the under dogs of the series, for some reason. I will however say that if 3 were to be redone with 4's engine (like how the first was redone with the 2nd's: Twin Snakes), it would probably take the cake for me. THAT would be fucking awesome.

I don't think I could pick a favourite. They're all great in different ways. MGS1 was (kinda) revolutionary, MGS2 was a huge step up and exactly what was needed after the first, MGS3 just blew me away and MGS4 was epic. I can understand how people would hate MGS4 but I love when huge effort has gone into a story in a game.
Although my favourite part of MGS4 was getting to replay a chunk of MGS1, then playing through the ruined Shadow Moses. Nostalgia overload.
I think MGS3 is probably objectively the best game in the series. It's so complete and well-crafted, especially if you buy Subsistence.
The only reason anyone hates/hated MGS4 was because it was a PS3 exclusive in a time when the PS3 was seen as a joke.
whoever thinks it sucks: play it. that's right: PLAY IT.
