He has the whole universe on his shoulder, past/present/future and he will continue to to this, forever."

Fuck, even after he rediscovered his humanity he decided that he'd rather just be alone make his own humans because we were too annoying.

Watchmen really should be required reading for every high school Senior.

I agree, it is an awesome work of art. Alan Moore is a genius.

How do you feel now? What are your personal thoughts about God?

I'm not religious, nor have I ever been, if there is a some sort of higher power of there, that's cool, but I don't think it affects me one way or the other.

With that said, within the context of the book, I just felt bad for all the characters he impacted, which was pretty everyone. Dr. Manhattan had taken it upon himself to do as much good for Mankind as he could; create new energy technologies, scientific advances, and et al.

However, at the same time he was doing all this good, he slaughtering the Vietcong, being used as a bargaining chip to scare other countries into submission, and to bolster our own (American) hubris; there might have been some perversion by humanity, but overall it appeared to me that he just never really care and ever longer held any interest or an emotionally investment in our morality; God was a liar.

His disillusion and general disinterest in the affairs of humans was got stuck with me; had he always felt this way? He had walked across the surface of the sun, built castle from sand, and literally watched human interaction at the tiniest, sub-atomic, level. In all culminated in the personal question "If there was a God, why would he give two shit about our problems when the whole UNIVERSE is his playground?"

If I was a religious person, I think that question would have brought me to my knees.

However, I am not a religious person, instead it just makes me profoundly sad for his character.

I'm not a religious person either, but I think of myself as a spiritual being, and I think you are a spiritual being too as is everyone, and we live in a spiritual world. I also think that God is more complicated than a single being.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.

...

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.

That is at bottom the only courage that is demanded of us: to have courage for the most strange, the most singular and the most inexplicable that we may encounter. That mankind has in this sense been cowardly has done life endless harm; the experiences that are called "visions," the whole so-called "spirit-world," death, all those things that are so closely akin to us, have by daily parrying been so crowded out of life that the senses with which we could have grasped them are atrophied. To say nothing of God. But fear of the inexplicable has not alone impoverished the existence of the individual; the relationship between one human being and another has also been cramped by it, as though it had been lifted out of the riverbed of endless possibilities and set down in a fallow spot on the bank, to which nothing happens. For it is not inertia alone that is responsible for human relationships repeating themselves from case to case, indescribably monotonous and unrenewed: it is shyness before any sort of new, unforeseeable experience with which one does not think oneself able to cope. But only someone who is ready for everything, who excludes nothing, not even the most enigmatical, will live the relation to another as something alive and will himself draw exhaustively from his own existence. For if we think of this existence of the individual as a larger or smaller room, it appears evident that most people learn to know only a corner of their room, a place by the window, a strip of floor on which they walk up and down. Thus they have a certain security. And yet that dangerous insecurity is so much more human which drives the prisoners in Poe's stories to feel out the shapes of their horrible dungeons and not be strangers to the unspeakable terror of their abode. We, however, are not prisoners. No traps or snares are set about us, and there is nothing which should intimidate or worry us. We are set down in life as in the element to which we best correspond, and over and above this we have through thousands of years of accommodation become so like this life, that when we hold still we are, through a happy mimicry, scarcely to be distinguished from all that surrounds us. We have no reason to mistrust our world, for it is not against us. Has it terrors, they are our terrors; has it abysses, those abuses belong to us; are dangers at hand, we must try to love them. And if only we arrange our life according to that principle which counsels us that we must always hold to the difficult, then that which now still seems to us the most alien will become what we most trust and find most faithful. How should we be able to forget those ancient myths about dragons that at the last moment turn into princesses; perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us. "
- Rainer Maria Rilke

"The first time you experience unconditional love as an adult, it may be a gentle melting of a glacier. Or it may be more of a cataclysm, like a giant earthquake that shakes you to your inner core. You are falling in love, but the act of receiving love that intense and all-encompassing changes your conception of yourself. You can't swim in such a vast ocean and remain entirely in the small pond of your limited self. Even if that opening is only for an instant, even if it goes away and is apparently forgotten, that moment of realization, of the heart opening, colors the rest of a lifetime. There is no going back. The lingering taste of that ultimate sweetness remains and won't be denied."
-Ram Dass

"Love has to spring spontaneously from within and it is in no way amenable to any form of inner or outer force. Love and coercion can never go together, but though love cannot be forced on anyone, it can be awakened in them through love itself. Love is essentially self-communicative-- those who do not have it catch it from those who have it. True love is unconquerable and irresistible, and it goes on gathering power and spreading itself until eventually it transforms everyone whom it touches."

"It was actually a little nerve wracking.. Nobody ever knew what to do next. Oh well, here we are, we're beautiful, now what? Too much freedom? I dunno... some people made better hippies than others... they lived in magic kingdoms, these golden ones. We looked at them, trying to figure out what it was they did and we didn't. I think they were all taken up in spaceships to some more highly evolved planet around 1970. Personally, I couldn't pull it off, I had too many hang-ups... I was cursed in some way, banished from the magic kingdom."

Whatchu know bout Howard Zinn?

“Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of leaders…and millions have been killed because of this obedience…Our problem is that people are obedient allover the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves… (and) the grand thieves are running the country. That’s our problem.”
― Howard Zinn
We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
― Howard Zinn
“I'm worried that students will take their obedient place in society and look to become successful cogs in the wheel - let the wheel spin them around as it wants without taking a look at what they're doing. I'm concerned that students not become passive acceptors of the official doctrine that's handed down to them from the White House, the media, textbooks, teachers and preachers”

I've been stressing out over the concept of "time" recently, trying to scrape up enough evidence to support the theory that it doesn't exist, just to put my mind at ease.

I just came across this one, simple Alan Watts quote while watching his "Art of Meditation" film, and all of my anxiety was put to rest.

"Neither past nor future actually exist; there is simply eternal now".

I suppose it works better in context, though...

"There is no need to search; achievement leads to nowhere. It makes no difference at all, so just be happy now! Love is the only reality of the world, because it is all One, you see. And the only laws are paradox, humor and change. There is no problem, never was, and never will be. Release your struggle, let go of your mind, throw away your concerns, and relax into the world. No need to resist life, just do your best. Open your eyes and see that you are far more than you imagine. You are the world, you are the universe; you are yourself and everyone else, too! It's all the marvelous Play of God. Wake up, regain your humor. Don't worry, just be happy. You are already free!”

“Because here's something else that's weird but true: in the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship -- be it JC or Allah, bet it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles -- is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It's the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It's been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness.”

Meaning is man-created. And because you constantly look for meaning, you start to feel meaninglessness.

"A noun isn't a part of nature, it's a part of speech. There are no nouns in the physical world. There are no separate things in the physical world, either. The physical world is wiggly. Clouds, mountains, trees, people, are all wiggly. And only when human beings get to working on things--they build buildings in straight lines, and try to make out that the world isn't really wiggly. But here we are, sitting in this room all built out of straight lines, but each one of us is as wiggly as all get-out."
