The thing that really got me about his chapter was that, for me, it basically boiled down to: "There is a God and it's not that He doesn't necessarily love Mankind, he just doesn't care; he's just going through the motions. Fuck, even after he rediscovered his humanity he decided that he'd rather just be alone make his own humans because we were too annoying.

I'm not religious, nor have I ever been, if there is a some sort of higher power of there, that's cool, but I don't think it affects me one way or the other.

With that said, within the context of the book, I just felt bad for all the characters he impacted, which was pretty everyone. Dr. Manhattan had taken it upon himself to do as much good for Mankind as he could; create new energy technologies, scientific advances, and et al.

However, at the same time he was doing all this good, he slaughtering the Vietcong, being used as a bargaining chip to scare other countries into submission, and to bolster our own (American) hubris; there might have been some perversion by humanity, but overall it appeared to me that he just never really care and ever longer held any interest or an emotionally investment in our morality; God was a liar.


His disillusion and general disinterest in the affairs of humans was got stuck with me; had he always felt this way? He had walked across the surface of the sun, built castle from sand, and literally watched human interaction at the tiniest, sub-atomic, level. In all culminated in the personal question "If there was a God, why would he give two shit about our problems when the whole UNIVERSE is his playground?"

If I was a religious person, I think that question would have brought me to my knees.

However, I am not a religious person, instead it just makes me profoundly sad for his character.

I'm not a religious person either, but I think of myself as a spiritual being, and I think you are a spiritual being too as is everyone, and we live in a spiritual world. I also think that God is more complicated than a single being.
