Default Dubstep

Anyone else listen? Lately I've been listening to a lot of dubstep + rap, and its fucking amazing. Check out Nappy's Thugstep mix, or this

Oh hell yes. A lot of big UK d'n'b raves have dubstep outside of the main room now, and it's a most warmly welcomed trend by me and a lot of my mates. Big speakers are a must.

I'm downloading that dubstep mix you linked to now. By some weird coincidence it's at exactly the same tempo as the tune I'm listening to now (not dubstep, it's a trip-hop tune), and the mix started playing in time with my music. It genuinely sounds like they're being mixed, so I'm letting 'em play together. Sweet.

Caspa & Rusko's Fabriclive.37, Plastician's Rinse 06 and Skream's 2008 Watch The Ride are all great introductions to the grimier, more jump-up side of dubstep. All are mixed. And Tayo's Fabriclive.32 is dubstep-heavy, plus ragga, dub and Baltimore/baile stylings. All are very highly recommended. I'm not quite so big on rap vocals over dubstep; if it's vocal dubstep, I much prefer beautiful-sounding female vocals, like the Plastician remix of Guilty by Kosheen (on the Rinse 06 CD).

And dubstep is just made for getting on drugs to, if that's your scene.

I've really been feelin the dubstep as well lately. Give Benga a listen, as well as the bigger names, Caspa, Rusko, Skream...Rusko's Essential Mix is a must-have, even though it's a little poppier at times than other dub.

Too right. If you like the more chilled-out side of dubstep, give Appleblim's Dubstep Allstars - Vol. 6 a listen. Not quite Burial levels of chill, but you'll never really find a mix that low-key throughout. Although from the Dubstep Allstars series, N-Type's Vol. 5 mix is my favourite.

And I love the way you can tell a Benga tune as soon as the main synth lines kick in, always. He's a very expressive producer.

The only dubstep that has really made a strong impression on me has been Burial, who is awesome.

Burial is more experimental than dubstep tbh.

Yeah I quite like dubstep, it's good to have on in the background but perhaps not so great to actually listen to, if you know what I mean.

I can't stand dubstep nights though. I've been to a couple in Leeds and in Bournemouth and they were all just shit. I don't even know why you'd ever think playing dubstep in a club is a good idea.

I get really annoyed when scene kids and girlyboys are like 'Oh yeah I'm really into dub' and then list a load of dubstep.

Burial's music is fairly bass-light, but you should be able to hear low frequencies in the music. It does help to have a sub, but even through half-decent speakers it should come through. If it's a download you need it at a high bitrate too; my copy's 320kbps and if yours is anything below 256 I'd recommend re-downloading a 320/FLAC copy.

Etched Headplate is sick to listen to on a real powerful system though.

Funckarma - Vell Vagranz

This is such a cool album if you want to hear some dubstep that's creepier and more abstract. Vocals on a few songs too.

Yeah dub is often all inclusive. People into reggae and drum and bass are often into dubstep.

Dubstep nights can be great, however they need a good crowd and a particularly good dj with sound system.

Went to N-Type on a perfectly stoned and drunk leve. That is the way to do it.

I fucking love dubstep. It's heaven in my ears and it makes my body move. I'm listening to Pro Nails by Rusko right now.

And how can you not like it in clubs? It's freaking awesome. I go crazy on the dance floor.

Caspa, Rusko and Excision have all spun here recently (at the same bar) and it was so amazing. I'm going to Skream on June 12. You guys should check Excision out, I don't think he's big outside of Canada...

There seems to be alot of snobbery in the electronic music scene though. The people I know either love dubstep or love to make fun of it, lol.
