MAC Address Tracing

If my friend spends some money online with some credit cards that he borrowed, will his MAC address give him away? Here's the situation:

He's using an iPod touch (most likely bought with a credit card at some point, at least 1-2 years ago, he can't remember) on a public WiFi connection (probably a local business or something). The iPod's "name" in iTunes is not connected to my friend at all.

Could the police call up Apple if they somehow acquired the MAC address and have Apple tell them who owns the iPod? Would they even be able to get the MAC address?

His purchases will all be under $1000, most likely even under $500 if that changes anything.

The online store will know your IP, which they will trace back to whoever paid for the internet connection you used. If the person/business with the connection is keeping logs on their router, it will record your MAC address. If you use a random house's open wifi they'll most likely not be keeping logs, but since it's so easy to spoof your MAC there's no point not to. I'm not sure if bigger businesses keep logs, it would depend on the business but I'd guess it's not common.

Yes, PC with mac address spoofed on public wifi.

If you use Windows as an operating system, you can spoof your mac address through the registry very easily. Look it up.

Just remember to change it before AND after.

Keep in mind that ALL into stays on the hard drive(even after running a cleaning program) unless you run a very heavy duty hard drive cleaner that will most likely damage the hard drive and take several days if not weeks to finish. Look it up.

A person could just use the public librarys computers...

if you're using a live linux distro, the boot medium (sdcard, flash drive, CD, HD, etc) doesn't matter, since no data will be written at all, unless you specifically tell it to. It also doesn't matter if there are any other harddrives in your computer. I don't think swallowing it would be a good idea, if you're in that much shit they'll just wait for you to take a shit or go get your stomach pumped.

No, they can't and don't record your MAC address. There are layers involved to reach the MAC on your hardware, and they can't get at it without special hacker tools, utils and apps. They COULD get it if they set you right up, but their systems are not designed to grab your MAC ID as a matter of course.

They would need to use a system called, U.D.I. to get at the MAC ID addresses on your network card, modem and router, and that system is restricted to ISP tech agents and above only.

The router could log all the mac addresses with time stamps. but this is of course easily counter acted, by spoofing your mac address.

And be sure for extra safety to immediately change that mac address after you are done.

just out of interest how do you spoof your mac addy, ive often seen it mentioned but never bothered to look into it before. is it easy? is there any risks? any good tutorials or texts anywhere?

Personally if I was going to do this...

• Use a linux live CD

• Spoof MAC address.

• Hack someones wifi from car (easy to do both WEP and WPA).

• Use a VPN in a dodgy country.

• Use an anonymity network or several proxies.

That is probably excessively paranoid. Where is he ordering the purchases to?

Apple do record the MAC address along with serial number etc, if you bought it from a shop and gave out your real name and address when buying it then they'll have that record and Apple technically order that their resellers hold onto that info for several years, if it were bought through Apple directly then Apple will have your details matched to the MAC address, so yes, you can be traced, it all depends on how much effort law enforcement was willing to go to based on how seriously naughty you've been.
