got a new haircut
After the cataract surgery, I felt like a new man, and decided to look like one.
I don't recall how many years it has been since my previous last haircut--between five and ten, I reckon. Until recently, it was down past my shoulders in back, down to my collarbone in front. Thin, stringy, split ends galore.
So I went to the local Great Cuts or Great Clips or whatever they call it, and got this modified blunt cut with a little bit of a taper on the sides. Now my hair is just barely collar-length in back. I love it.
Now I don't have to fuss and fool around. The way it is cut now, I can just finger-comb it apres-shower and I'm good to go.
Got my beard trimmed real short, too.

I have no idea what either of those styles looks like, so I will have to take your word for it.

Sounds like someone has the gene for male pattern baldness.
Hint: it ain't me.

I would rather go blind than forfeit my dignity by begging for charity.

Well said. I am sure you are famous for your dignity. God bless you and keep you.
For myself, what you puff up by calling "dignity," I would characterize as self-defeating and unproductive pride, which is a luxury I cannot afford, for several reasons.

Re: got a new haircut
To me, I define "pride" in the sense of one of the seven deadly sins. Evidently, some folks equate "pride" with "self-esteem", which is almost the opposite.
Pride has one put oneself above others--self-esteem says simply that we are okay with ourselves as we are.
If I succumb to pride, next I might be thinking I am special--which is absolutely fucking fatal to spiritual growth. More dangerous yet, I might become so prideful that I would think that the facts about alcoholism do not apply to me, and I might pick up a drink.
If I would do that, life as I know it would end, and probably badly. And yes, it would only take one drink.
