How bad is it for your health to eat fruit without washing it??

I know they spray pesticides and chemicals on fruits and berries and shit, but I normally don't wash them before I eat them. Heres why. I work in the produce department of a large grocery store. Whenever I go into the back fridge I normally eat fruit. We are not allowed to do this, but everyone in the department does anyways. The thing is, we can't wash the fruit before we eat it because the sinks are under camera surveillance... In fact, I think the cooler is the only place in the store without cameras.

Every shift I eat a case of raspberries or blue berries, and then I normally eat strawberries or something else.

How bad is this for my health? I don't want to keep doing this then get colon cancer 10 years from now because of all the pesticides and shit.

Do you wash your fruit/vegetables?

I guess I could do that, but only at certain times. I cant have my manager walk into the cooler and see me washing down a bucket of berries. If someone walks in while your eating you just quickly hide the food (its real easy the cooler is full of shit) and pretend you're looking for something.

The water would make it pretty hard to lie about what you're doing.

I mainly eat berries. Not practical.

E: I'm not so much looking for solutions, as to info on the negative effects of pesticide consumption. If it turns out its really bad for you I will probably just stop stealing fruit.

I'm with this guy. I don't wash my damn fruit, they're already washed honestly.. Maybe not the GREATEST, but they are. I don't fuck with it, have never had any sickness because of it.

I don't know for sure but I don't think the store or the fruit companies would sell fruit that hadn't had the pesticides washed off. My mom was always telling me to wash fruit when I was a kid, so I usually still do out of habit.

It depends on where the fruit is coming from, if it's from the organic farme down the road then it would be pretty harmless, however if it was imported from abroad it would be full of pesticides and probably very dirty as well.

My concerns have NOTHING to do with dirt or bacteria, this thread is going off topic. It was supposed to be about pesticides, because thats all I'm really concerned about.

BUT, while were on the topic, you should always wash your fruit. Take it from me, someone who works in produce, that shit is not even close to clean. I will sneeze into my hands then continue to handle all the fruit. I'm sure other employees do much worse (like take a shit then continue working without washing). Wash your fruit if its possible.

though, you have to consider the pesticide as well: if the pesticide is safe enough to pass regulations, is probably safe enough to eat in small quantities right?

im sure pesticides can be metabolised, and they dont accumulate.

If there's any type of FDA seal on the packaging then I'd say that's a safe sign the fruit was washed in a manner deemed worthy by the government at the processing plant, and, frankly, that's good enough for me. Besides, produce used in commercial kitchens is almost never washed before it goes into the food.

Supermarkets, fruit sellers and farmers won't leave themselves open to lawsuits from someone getting ill from their fruit. It's too much of danger with bad publicity, not to mention the damage to their hip pocket, for them to risk.

So the fruit is most likely safe to eat, unwashed.

This. Exactly this, you've got to get the display wax off the apple anyway. Shining it on your shirt = win. I clean blades and de-burr chisels on my jean legs, wipe my hands on my jean hips, and shine my apples on my shirt.

You should always wash leafy greens, however.

Pesticides are no problem if the food is US, they instated some laws after all that DDT spraying and shit back in the 1900's. If it's from, Mexico or soething, probably some pestcides, nothing that'll kill you, however.
