Holy Crap! [Comet hitting sun. From TJI]

Take a look at this spectacular happening!

What is it? It’s an animation made from images taken by ESA’s SOHO solar observatory showing a comet diving into the Sun on October 1, and then a large CME (coronal mass ejection) erupting immediately thereafter.

Now, typically science has said that there is no connection between comets impacting the Sun and CMEs, or any other major eruption event. Comets are just too small to cause something like that to occur. Right?

Well, after seeing this, science isn’t quite so sure anymore.

If you look at the timeline, it happened minutes later...

Kinda hard to conclude anything with just one data point; and worse yet, one where the CME occurs minutes later.

EDIT : Actually, that time shown in the pictures is probably hours. Depends on what that number means. Sure the process might take that long, but...

Comets are indeed to small to cause that. They have had no major effect on Jupiter, let alone on the Sun itself.

I remain skeptic aswell.
I must admit though that the sun is pretty fucking big, and it probably would take some time after the impact for the CME to occur.
So i won't deny the possiblity.

It is hours.

So the CME happened about 2 hours after the initial impact.
