In Its Image - A Startling Documentary about Artificial Intelligence
This is a documentary about the very real and current capabilities of artificial intelligence. Some of the products you see advertised for on TV were invented by "Creativity Machines". The film suggests immortality may even be capable in the future due to this technology, and claims that the universe itself exhibits similar functions, that "there is a conversation going on between schizophrenic regions of space", a "cosmic consciousness". That everything is filled with this consciousness, and that it is all around us.
Is the universe itself a Creativity Machine? Does this sound like the so-called singularity that McKenna talked about?

Re: In It's Image
"It's" is a contraction for "it is". It's supposed to be "its".
This amuses me.

That's the websites mistake. I don't think the documentary itself uses the apostrophe.

Who the fuck knows, man? How to prove a theory like that? It's one hell of a logic and physics problem, if you ask me.

This is real technology, too. This is the technology responsible for the creation of certain super conductors.

Then you're choosing to be ignorant.
This technology isn't crap, it is as real as the computer you're using.

Creativity machines alright. I bet that's what they have inside of the giant ufo hanging just above my roof right now. I would be choosing to be ignorant if i let my brain get exposed to that link.

Re: In It's Image - A Startling Documentary about Artificial Intelligence
This is terrible! This is completely what my beliefs and my spirituality stand against!
Technology goes hand-in-hand with Desire, because technology only moves in one direction: more. Do you realize that humans have lived the majority of their existence without the internet? It is my belief that we were better for it.
Notice how we didn't need a computer until the computer was invented? Or, how the VCR offered the most high-def picture, until the DVD, until the blu-ray, until the internet stream. Technology only advances itself.
And why is it that the Wii I got as a gift three years ago fails to delight me now, like it did when I first plugged it in? How is it that a life of "immortality" will be "better" than the mortal life I'm living now?
I don't want quantity, I want quality. I don't want more, I want meaning.

Apparently you like to hang around bullshit without actually tending to the bull. How pathetic. If you can't even come up with something better to say than "this is crap, fuck you, bullshit boolshit boolshit" then why are you even inviting yourself into these parts of zoklet? Did you come in here just to say that? You're seriously one of the most boring people on zoklet. How does that feel?
Anyway, if this is the AI video about the robot that's in construction named "Bertha", I'd rather not watch it again. It was freaky enough the first time I saw it (and that's coming from me). Of the first things this AI can verbalize, destruction of other men and conquering the planet were of the first to be said.
I'll watch the video to see and respond. Ethan stickied it for a reason I'm sure.

It seems to me that your beliefs and spirituality are backwards-looking, or limited in a way, perhaps; they seek to retard humanity, rather than advance it.
I think we should embrace the possibilities of the future, and stop mourning for the (non-existent) past. I'd like to note, as a "history hobbyist", that the past as you may conceive of it exists only in your mind: we were never wiser or more good or happier than we are now, and we were usually a good deal worse off altogether.
Quote:

|
Who could fail to realize that? We also lived the majority of our existence without toilet paper, antibiotics, or language; and with parasites, suffering, and violence. Whether or not humanity has had something for a long time has no bearing on its worth.
From the above, you can probably deduce that I think we were most definitely not the better for it. Look at all the learning, and information, and knowledge the Internet enables us to acquire, and share, and achieve.
Quote:
|

Another way you could put it is that we don't realize what we're missing until we've had it.
But taken more literally: we still don't need computers. Computers enable us to achieve many things we have never been able to achieve before, however, so in this way, we have always needed their capability (to achieve these things; i.e., reach our full potential) - we just didn't have them.
Quote:
|
Or, how the VCR offered the most high-def picture, until the DVD, until the blu-ray, until the internet stream. Technology only advances itself.
|
Yes, technology changes and advances. Why is this an "only"? "Technology, amazingly, advances itself" is just as appropriate... more so, in fact, since it is a minor miracle that technology is self-accelerating in the way it is.
Would you rather we stop trying to improve, and simply accept a poorer quality than we are capable of? Do you watch something in the best quality available, or are you still using the VCR?
Quote:
|
And why is it that the Wii I got as a gift three years ago fails to delight me now, like it did when I first plugged it in?
|
That's nothing to do with technology. That's a trick your brain pulls on you, called the hedonic treadmill... as well as a natural something that happens to humans called getting bored. Technology can't cure that one yet, entirely.
Edit: It's managed it pretty well for me, actually, come to think of it.
Quote:

Well, if your life is poor, it won't be better. Otherwise, I believe it is clear why it would be better: more of what you like, and no time limit on your enjoyment. This is the way I said your beliefs seemed limited; here, you don't conceive of having both quality and quantity.
"If you have immortality," you seem to be saying, "you cannot then have a good life also." This is not true. Possibly, it is because you don't have a good life now, in which case I can't blame you for not personally wanting immortality... but that doesn't make this "terrible", since you can simply choose to not be immortal.

I want to start by defining "Technology" as advancement from the Industrial Revolution onward. This time period wrought changes that have destroyed the coherency with which man once though of himself.
Ancient man was defined by and inseparable from his work and labor. What he did was who he was. Only after the Industrial Revolution does the question, "What is my life's purpose?" begin to appear in the mind's of men.
Wage labor separated man from the product of his creation; wage labor separated man from purpose in life.
The Family existed as a means to ensure the survival of the individual. With the Industrial Revolution, the Family no longer works together to provide food for the individual, rather the individual works alone to provide food for the family. The same goes for the Community at large.
The man goes to the factory to work, but what does the woman do? She is relegated to the home and housework. However, her contribution to the family is devalued because the labor she provides isn't economically quantifiable.
The kids? No longer working and learning alongside their parents, they are sent to school. This separation is exaggerated by technology, which only advances itself. The technology their parents know, and the technology they are familiar with is vastly different. So different that kids begin to think of Mom and Dad as 'outdated' and start to perceive a generation gap. (The Amish outlaw technology for this exact reason. Go to Pennsylvania and you'll see 80 year old men working along side their 18 year old grand children in the fields, something that cannot be said about computers and the internet.)
Now, I probably spanned about 1500 years worth of history in 5 paragraphs, and made enormous generalizations, but hopefully my point of view is more clear:
Technology has destroyed the unity and value that man once found in himself, his family, and his community. I am not nostalgic for some sepia-toned, Hallmark-moment of history; this is not simply Rosy Retrospection. What I believe is that technology, and the conveniences it offers have had negative consequences. They have caused man to think it is the finished product that matters and not the process; that quantity is more important that quality; and that more is better than less.

I would argue that these things are relics of a primitive past. As you pointed out, family and community were necessary for survival throughout history. Now we are free from those bonds to live as we choose. We are no longer forced to conform to the mold of social judgment.

The process is boring and laborious, whereas the finished product is something you can enjoy. Though in hindsight, the process might seem like a good time, in reality it was not ( link). Frankly, this is a step in the right direction.

This is a matter of opinion. You cannot objectively say that quality is more substantial than quantity. My life is evidence of that. If offered a choice between 1 steak tenderloin and 4 big macs, I'll take the big macs every time.

In what possible circumstance would more not be better than less? Poisoning and radiation aside, having more stuff equates to more happiness ( up to a point).

I would argue that these things are relics of a primitive past. As you pointed out, family and community were necessary for survival throughout history. Now we are free from those bonds to live as we choose. We are no longer forced to conform to the mold of social judgment.
Lets see...

I would argue that "better" is subjective, and some people may cherish things that other people deem unnecessary or primitive. You may not care about family - other people may. You might think more is better then less. Others would disagree. Some people would say the world is getting better, and others would say it is getting worse; really, that just depends on how you look at it.
Reality is always changing, we are always changing. Sometimes change sucks, but some would say it's less painful when you learn to roll with the punches, and I agree.

So, the vibe I got from this video is that human beings are just machines, and reality is just some sort of advanced computer simulation.
I wonder who programmed this dream.
I particularly like the end of the video.

Yeah, I got a similar vibe. Something like that anyway. Probably more complex than imaginable.

If life/reality is a metaphorical computer simulation, and time is an illusion, then perhaps we are the metaphorical programmer.

Or are we just apart of the program?
