Nope. Rick Grimes was a cop, before the disaster. There government no longer controls the land and thus he can no longer really consider himself an "officer of the law". In this world, the "law" doesn't really mean anything. He has no more real authority or responsibility then anyone else.

This makes zombie invasions funny: no one can tell you what to do.
I would have let that bitch die, instead of risk my own life and getting annoyed by her dumb, weak mother...

That's something the comic deals with extensively over the course of the issues.
Rick Grimes slowly realizes that the ways of the "old law" don't amount to shit when society has collapsed. He comes less "Rick Grimes" and more "Frank Castle".

I just saw the 1st season and didn't like it very much. There's entire episodes with no zombies and nothing but fucking heart-to-heart talks every 4 minutes.

That's interesting perspective, that his old authority was 'real'.
My take on the character is that he will always have authority. Before, he had a fake formal authority given to him by the state. Now the petty constructs of human society have been so violently destroyed, he's left with only his commanding presence and innate leadership abilities.
I wouldn't say he had no more real authority than anybody else. I'd say he, probably now more than ever, has genuine authority and responsibility. Essentially, you'd go along with him because of him- not because this confidence trick of a social system gives him a gun and badge.

Re: The Walking Dead Season 2
On another note, I fucking adored first season.
Episode 1 of season 2 wasn't bad, but I don't think it was up to par. If the first season had been the same level, I don't know if I'd have bothered watching season 2 as soon it was released.

Fuck, when are they going to make a Zombie flick/show/whatever without the lovey-dovey bullshit?
It's a fucking zombie apocalypse, I want to see human outposts fighting to keep the zombie hordes away and shit.

That's why I love the zombie genre. I want to see the human condition, and human interaction, without the constraints placed upon them by the now torn down society. Humans in true, fine line between life and death, freedom. It's the appeal of post-apocalypse fiction in general I think.
With zombies, there's an added bonus. There is a savage enemy to fight against, with no moral hang-ups. It's a chance to indulge the killer instincts and desire for violence and destruction that we all have to suppress, day in and day out.
I'd love to write zombie fiction, but I suspect it'd just end up being an exercise in cathartic masturbation for me and nobody else would enjoy it.

It's the beginning of the "people get seriously injured often" theme will floats throughout the rest of the comic/show.

If you start reading the comics just realize that the show differs from a lot; it has some of the same plot-points and characters (more of less), but people have a tendency of dying a lot more (especially main characters).

xvid is just the encoding style. I think it's DivX or something like that.
but torrents suck. Download through rapidshare/fileserve/filesonic or any other file site. It's quite a bit faster and you don't have to worry getting bitched at by your ISP for using torrents. There are websites out there that have forums where people post their rapidshare/fileserve links.

Re: The Walking Dead Season 2
Embedded xvid players are likely some kind of malware.
Torrents don't suck if you can find a reliable site with an active community that screens for viruses, like demonoid. You'll also need a good torrent client, like uTorrent. The Walking Dead episodes will download at +500kbps, even 1mbit or whatever your max bandwidth is.
Distortion is right though, some ISPs are beginning to block or slow service for users they identify as pirates.

Episode 2 was OK; had some intriguing moments and some decent character development between Rick and Shane that I think really captured the "suck it up or die" attitude of the comics.
However, the horse riding woman who saves the day was pretty luzy, so was Dale calling a grown man "T-Dog" and keeping a straight face.
I give it a B-.

Re: The Walking Dead Season 2
The new episode was good I think. That black guy is getting all paranoid ("omg deys gonna lynch me" ) which is lame but at least they made contact with a safe point with other useful survivors.
I'm really hoping they're not gonna kill off that one redneck dude who shot the kid in some kind attempt for the audince to get "vengance". He's auctually a pretty cool dude he just made a mistake.
I assume the girl may be dead at this point though. I mean really it's been like 3 days and she's all alone in the woods. Thirst/hunger/elements will get her if not the zombies.

They should see what happens when you give the zombies some ecstasy that merle(sp?) had in his stash. Maybe they'd stop trying to eat people and just hug them instead.

Do you guys think that Merle (sic?) will come back in a later episode to cause drama, or will he just disappear from the series?
I'd like to see him show up with a gang of bandits/cannibals, bitch slap rick and lynch t-dog.
Most likely he will just disappear, since he and his brother aren't in the comics. He would make a great Governor though.
