This is tough to explain, but if you meditate for a while--say, at least a year--a lot of stuff just starts making sense.

Most of our thoughts are idle or uncharitible anyway.

Perceptual change is about a subtle shift. "Stepping back from the view" or changing your perspective is not about "not thinking" or "not thinking good thoughts". It's not about disconnecting any more than it is about connecting to something larger.

It is a perceptual shift, from the observer, to the observed and over again. Eventually you'll come to ask yourself who or what is behind the act of observing yourself. It is your own consciousness, but it is not represented wholly by any single experience. So the more we define and put ourselves in a certain position, the more we experience it.

By taking a step back we can change our perspective and see that we are working to partially generate what is limiting us in life. Even just focusing on what you don't want disrupts your life from experiencing what you want.

This, to me, is about trying to understand who and what you are and what is happening in observation of the self.
