Mr. Bean BAMF; saved a plane with his wife and kids in it after the pilot passed out
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/me...ut-688731.html
Quote:
The comedian Rowan Atkinson was forced to cast aside his Mr Bean public persona to take the controls of a small plane containing his wife and children after the pilot passed out 16,000ft over Kenya.
According to a report on The Spectator magazine's website yesterday, Mr Atkinson, 46, who had never taken flying lessons, took the controls and flew the privately chartered Cessna for several minutes after the young pilot slumped backwards and could not be revived.
As his wife, Sunetra, tried to bring the pilot around by shouting at him, shaking him and splashing water on his face, the comedian - Britain's best-known comedy export for Mr Bean and Blackadder - tried to correct the downwards trajectory the aircraft had taken.
He succeeded, despite an initial over-compensation. His children Ben, 8, and Lilly, 6, remained quietly in their seats the whole time.
The potentially deadly situation ended several minutes later when, just as suddenly as he had passed out, the European pilot regained consciousness and the 75-minute journey from the Ukundu airstrip ended at Wilson Airport in Nairobi on time, because the plane had not changed course.
It is possible that the dramatic drop in temperature that takes place when a plane rises from the African heat to a cruising altitude was responsible for the pilot's loss of consciousness.
Neither Mr Atkinson nor his agent were available to comment on the reports last night.

Oh, big deal, he managed to keep the plane level for a few minutes. You see the ground getting closer, you pull up, you see the altitude rising quickly, you pull down.

Anyone can fly a plane. It's actually easier than driving a car.

I think the landing would be the hard part.

Landing on an airstrip? That is difficult. But landing in a field? Not difficult. PS - this guy didn't land the plane.

It's not just as simple as 'pulling up' if you raise/lower the nose to hard in either direction in a private plane (of which his was most likely a single or twin prop Cessna) you WILL stall. Knowing how to recover from a stall and to restart the engine(s) is something that requires a large amount of know how and skill. Also a slight bit of turbulence, temperature change, draft, low pressure could of been disastrous for them. So yes he didn't have to do much but he could of unwillingly dropped several thousand feet or gone to high and stalled after what was most likely a nose dive by the pilot. Without googling can you tell me what the standard flight height for a single prop Cessna is? *waits for resounding no...* until you understand the mechanics of flying never say 'big deal' there's a reason why you have to do 200 hours do get a license.

Re: Mr. Bean BAMF; saved a plane with his wife and kids in it after the pilot passed
Landing's easy it's getting the alignment right for your decent that's difficult. You just need to remember to a) have your landing gear down b) put flaps to 30 c) reduce speed to 20-25 knots d) lift the nose and land on the first 1/8th of the landing strip. As you land you keep your throttle low 10 knots but still on in case you stuff it up and need to lift off again and use your rudders (the peddles) to taxi down the run way and keep a straight course down the middle. Then once your front wheel is on the tarmac and your good cut the engine and put your flaps on full. Don't hold me to the air speed's as it varies from plane to plane and your landing strip etc.

Yeah because dumbass faggots like you have to make everything more complicated than it really is just to justify creating these bureaucratic obstacles to freedom as well as securing for yourselves a market where you can make money yelling at people and treating them like children. Flying a plane is simple, we have young kid criminals over here like Colton Harris-Moore who can steal them and fly them like cars.

1) Well, don't pull up or down too hard. You'd have to be a retard to think that pulling in one direction hard would be a good idea.

Who cares? Just keep it around the same height it was before the pilot passed out. You should be able to get around the same height if you looked out the windows when the plane was stable and then try to make ground structures look about the same distance. Or just look out the bloody window and see that things aren't too close.

the 9/11 hijackers had no flight experience. It was actually only their second time even being in a plane. These were dirty sand niggers that got sent straight from their mud house in Saudi Arabia to American so they could steal a plane.

ive taken over the controls of many small aircraft as a young child. its not that hard once your in the air especially if your just flying straight. hell i even flew the channel 7 news helicopter when i was 8 years old (uncle was the pilot, took me for a spin.)
still, i guess it took some balls to run into the cabin and take over an out of control plane. after this and crashing his mclaren F1 mr bean is starting to look like an absolute LAD! ahah.

You're an idiot. The 9/11 terrorists had plenty of flight experience. Hani Hanjour already had a pilot's license, and several of the others went to Arizona for training.
God damned mother fucking uninformed ignorant retards on this website I swear to god. . . five seconds on Google could have told you what I just explained.

Hani Hanjour actually wasn't the one flying the plane.
He was just one of the CIA's scapegoat to deceive Americans into thinking this was carried out by trained pilots.
They don't want you to know that any idiot can commandeer a plane and fly it into shit.

I've done the same thing when I was a kid. Unbeknownst to me the pilot handled rudder control to avoid slides or slips, as well as any other adjustments nescessary, and obviously kept me in safe situations.
I imagine something similar happened in the helicopter, except he would have handled even more without telling you, since helicopters are quite unstable beasts.
@Over confident idiots in this thread: Flight dynamics are quite complex. More than you know judging by the sounds of you. In addition not all planes are as forgiving to fly as say, a cessna or similar design, and we don't know what kind of plane they went up in.
Finally, this next comment is directed specifically at this fool:

Planes are not forgiving to self or target like cars are when you have a crash. We can accept a certain number of idiots in cars. The same number of idiots in planes would be catastrophic.

no, i was in complete control for a while but they were guiding me through exactly what to do. by my 5th flight they even let me take off on my own, they wouldnt let me land though . i agree it would have been a lot harder (read:impossible) for me to intuitively know how to use everything without their guidance though. although it does prove that a child can fly a plane with a little instruction, at least for 10-15 minutes at a time.
and yeah the heli was seemingly a lot more difficult, and a lot more sensitive to your inputs (almost lost control LOL!) he was definately helping me out there.

The problem is knowing what to do when situations change, yes the basic controls can be grasped fairly quickly, but if certain aerodynamic effects had taken place you would have been a) SOL or b) Not sure if they could talk you through the adjustments fast enough to not make it a very uncomfortable ride. How much were you actually handling out of curiousity? Yoke obviously, what about rudder? Flaps, choke/throttle/mixture? How about desired cruise speed/altitude/heading, versus things like air temperature, etc?
Another reason why we don't let people just up-and-away in planes is we need to trust people to be able to communicate well to avoid in air collisions, even if their individual flight skill is good.

The problem with helis is that, for example, an increase in say, collective pitch increases the moment on the fuselage, so you would need a corresponding change in yaw moment from the tail rotor, which may then require some cyclic adjustment to avoid the helicopter moving left/right, etc. You have to do a lot at once and you can't just move the yoke to position X, realise its a mistake, move it back, and hope that the helicopter itself will return to its heading/position a moment ago.

With the trim and throttle already set a kid can hold level flight... if it's set well he will barely need to touch the controls. Taking off isn't so bad either in a small single engine, just more dangerous due to you being close to the ground.
If the pilot hadn't regained consciousness Mr Bean would have been in a huge amount of shit.

Were you controlling yaw (the pedals, antitorque)? Again, level flight is by FAR the easiest thing to do.

Speaking of idiocy... Are you aware that the average person can't afford a god damned plane? Stupid mother fucker, I told you not to fuck with me, now that I have your residential address I think I'll be heading on down to your place pronto. My cameraman and I want to see if your punk ass is even willing to open the door when I knock on it.

Are you implying that someone with the financial means or financial irresponsibility to purchase a plane, or time in one (not that expensive) will somehow be guaranteed to not be an idiot who crashes his plane into a school?

Your argument was that more people in planes = greater risk to civilians. "We can accept a certain number of idiots in cars" you said. If the licensing bullshit was dropped tomorrow it's not like everyone would be able to go out and buy a plane. Your attitude is deplorable. And for the record I do think that every man, woman and child should be issued a jumbo jet and I hope they all take them out for spins and fly them in to every Communist piece of shit public education center, nursery, hospital and county jail in this fucked up world.

No its not like 6.something billion people will go out and get planes tommorow.
But in the following few months a large amount of people who can't operate a radio to request clearance for landing would certainly give it a whirl.

"Can't operate a radio" more horseshit excuses. Anyone can operate a radio. Sure, not everyone can follow the stupid bullshit lingo but that shit was nothing but another excuse to justify your regulation economy and your unwarranted sense of self-importance. Want to get clearance? Just fuck with the radio and yell "YO CLEAR THAT BITCH" over and over until you get a positive response from the faggot working the control tower at the airport. Then run up in there with your AK-47 and blast his faggot ass. That's what he gets for taking that job anyway. Requesting clearance, what a crock of shit. There's always room for clearance, the odds of running in to someone are really low. The problem with you idiots is that you don't realize that everything is self-regulating. If the airstrip isn't clear then god damnit just fly over, turn around and come back and try again. The odds are you're going to have a window of opportunity to get in there. And if for some reason you can't just land on the street or a field or something. Shit, you paid for the streets, you might as well use them how you damn well please.

Judging by the over-the-topness of what you just said, even you have realised how dumb your original comments were, so I guess this conversation is over.
