Default Who wants to help me cook something?

Im not really much of a cook, but I've been putting off learning more about cooking my own meals. I'm sure my son is probably getting tired of Chef Boyardee and easy mac, anyway.

So, as a first step I'd like your help deciding on a meal and some good suggestions/recipes to cook this meal as a really late lunch.

I'm going big here, too. Right now, I'm thinking something semi-exotic. Bison burgers, lobster tail, or some other type of seafood. I need your help zoklets.

What do?

Well, I'm trying here, but I truly am a total stove noob. Any tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I'm at the store right now.

I've got Atlantic salmon, ground bison, lamb loin chops, and lobster tails.

I'm going to choose which to cook when I get home. Any suggestions between now and then are welcomed.

not the sort of things id usually cook with but still i wouldn't let that put me off. i'd go for the salmon personally, i take it you mean filleted salmon btw. i would probably try a bit of peppar over them, chop up some onion and a knob of butter, chuck em in the oven for about 20 minutes. wrapping in foil to cook would probably help stop them drying up.

let me know what you pick anyway and ill let you know what i think.

I'm going with the salmon because I'm cooking with my little sister too and she likes salmon.

What else should I cook with it? Maybe some rice, coleslaw, and veggies?

seafood is dead simple. calamari, shrimp, scallops, damned near whatever, until you get into fish dishes....

melt some butter in a pan, add some garlic, sautee on medium heat for about 7 minutes.

eat.

throw over a nice alfredo pasta with some roasted peppers, maybe some corn if you want to get a little fancier.

basic leg of lamb isn't too hard either, and damned good...hell you can't really go wrong with it, rub it with some salt and pepper, throw in a pan with potatos, carrots, celery, bake. nomnomnom..

sounds good, you tend to have slightly different cuisine over in the US to what we have. how would you do the rice? and what veg would you do? broccoli would go well, if thats what you call it there.

check something like this for cooking times and tempretures

I don't know if I should bake it or pan fry it for best flavor, but this sounds tasty.

I can do pasta. That shits easy, even for me. So, I'm thinking either pan fry or bake with garlic and onions and serve over pasta alfredo with sauteed onions and peppers...with what on the side? Breadsticks or rolls and one other thing?

Feels like I'm about a side away from nice meal.

I don't know about the rice, but it seems like it'd go nice some broccoli, carrots, onions, and peppers. Like I said, I'm as noobish about cooking as you can get. Probably worse than WAN, to be honest.

Sweet potatoes are good. Not really my taste, though.

with seafood, sautee, in a pan in the butter. you can pan fry as well, though with delicate seafood you want to avoid baking it.
Fish is better for baking. if you have any cast iron skillets you might google "blackening" as well, that's a cajun style where you essentially pan sear in the seasonings, like with catfish...really good and really easy, you just coat the fish and give em a few minutes in a hot skillet.

sautee just means "cook in butter on medium heat, and stir often" basically.

like i said, you're cooking them for less than ten minutes that way, if there's shrimp in the mix, you're done when they turn pink.

pan frying fish might be a bit bold for someone with low cooking skills. its not so easy to tell when its done as you got to judge it by eye. baking you can just set the temp and time. you cant go so wrong.

Yea, I think can run with this. Thanks for the tips.

The Redneck Nachos was a totally serious suggestion. There's a local restaurant here called Kirkenburt's, and that's their signature dish. I had some a couple days ago and it was the shit. They're also the only place I've ever heard of that serves 40oz beers in brown paper bags with your meal.

I love the south

I'll take pics of the finished dish.

Cheese burger with onion rings is pretty American and tasty. Sweet potatoe pie is always a popular dessert during the holidays. Whipped cream on top makes it awesome.

Biscuits and gravy are good breakfast foods. BLT's, Bacon egg and cheese sandwiches, and southwestern omelettes are all really good.

figuring out gravy in general is a good american food thing...white, brown, poultry, and sausage gravy are pretty versatile, and dead simple once you've made them a couple times.

No, not technically. They're from this side of the border, but I'm guessing your after things like biscuits and gravy, Fried potatoes and smoked sausage, Cream corn, Chili, Gumbo. Look up depression food, it's probably as close to a american ethnic food as you'll find

No, that doesn't sound like a joke, it sounds like AWESOME NACHOS.

Yes nachos are Mexican. If you consider Taco Bell as Mexican. There's no such thing as proper American stuff, we mix crap together until it tastes good and contains as much saturated fat as possible.

They sort of taste like a pumpkin cross a potato is just about the best way to describe it.

Cooking is incredibly simple all you have to do is WATCH WHAT YOUR COOKING! if you monitor your cooking you can't ruin it because you should be checking it, therefore know when something is going wrong. Always taste as your going too, when you add a new ingredient it's always good to give it a quick taste test. Once you've cooked something enough times or are a costumed to the effect of adding certain ingredients and the amount's it becomes less necessary but it's still a good rule of thumb. Season everything, and as with you add when your doing it by taste alone add small amounts then taste and add more.

Now without tasting it this is not much to go by but looks like you did good. The salmon looks well cooked maybe 1 minute less depending on how easy it was staying together. The vegetables look a tad over cooked, a general rule for any vegetable or anything from the potato family is that it's cooked when you can put the tip of your knife in the stalk/body of it with ease. It should be about the same pressure as putting the knife tip in a block of unsalted room temp butter. As for doing rice you can boil it which i personally never do, use a rice cooker which makes things easy or microwave it. If you microwave, it will come out the same as rice cooker just about 5 minutes sooner.
If you want a guide for cooking rice say so. But honestly that dish didn't look that bad, how it tasted is a whole different kettle of fish, but I'd eat that.

I was looking at your pic and i think you might have over-cooked your veggies; they are losing their colours. but it should be a very nutritious meal.
