Re: best linux distro
I'm not sure if its the best, but Ubuntu has won user friendly awards and is well polished.

Ubuntu is pretty and works probably the best as far as I know, out of the box. Easier to use too.

Re: best linux distro
I just tried Ubuntu 11.10 and didn't like it so much. I miss 10.10
Trying out Fedora 16 though.

Re: best linux distro
Crunchbang is good but it's what you'd call an intermediate distro. It's fast as fuck, stable, works out of the box and the default gui is sexy if you like minimalism, but it requires use of shortcut keys and some basic terminal knowledge to really get the best out of it.

Re: best linux distro
Another vote for Ubuntu here. I ran that shit for a while before I realized that it was totally unnecessary for me to run Linux if all I was going to be doing was going on the internet and playing video games.

Re: best linux distro
It really depends on what you want to do with it, lol. However since a sexy gui is a must, I suggest like most others here that you go for Ubuntu. It's retardedly user friendly. however if you want to be an uber leet haxx0r then I suggest you go with backtrack.

Re: best linux distro
Fedora 16, and 15 both wouldn't load on my computer for some reason. Was using Fedora 14 for a bit, but I got frustrated with it. Loaded Ubuntu 10.10 back on again.

Re: best linux distro
Check out OpenSuSE or Mint. Both are great, Mint is more popular.

Fedora is not really a Desktop Distro, it's more a 'workstation' distro for people with RHEL.

Re: best linux distro
Stay away from Ubuntu. At this point pretty much all the distros are on even ground with one exception, Ubuntu. The dev cycle is ludicrous and the updates brake the fuck out of existing systems. Mint and SUSE are respectable. I'm a big advocate of Debian since its dependency management system kicks all kinds of ass. It will save you hours every week.

Re: best linux distro
I haven't tried ubuntu for almost a year now, I think I was on 10.1ish but it was easily the most user friendly out of the box distro I've tried. I've heard they're using GNOME 3 now and it's supposed to be shit, so keeping in mind what Lanny said I'd look around for ubuntu 10.1 and keep it unpatched until you learn the ropes.

Re: best linux distro
Ditch Ubuntu altogether. People talk about it being so "user friendly". What's user friendly about it? The fact that it comes with X/GNOME? Yea, that's pretty much every distro that exists. Oh, it has a good repository/software installation scheme? Nope, stole that from Debian and then makes you use the multiverse repo to get anything useful, which also happens to be filled with untested buggy software. Cool move Canonical.

Re: best linux distro
I found it easiest to use from my raw transition from windows a while ago, and I tried all the major "n00b packs" like debian and mint.

Re: best linux distro
It's really hard for me to remember what an "easy to use" distro means for most people. I've long sailed past that boat.
When Ubuntu was first being popularized, the packet manager wasn't a universally adopted mechanism. realplayer was still king and most computers had under a gig of memory.
The graphical installer was bleeding edge (xp didn't even have it) and seen as a game changer for Linux (lol).
Ubuntu was easy to use in comparison to other distros (whos tech support was 'read the man pages'). All the other distros have caught up now and Ubuntu keeps adding annoying bling.

Re: best linux distro
After fucking with a bunch of different distros from being dissatisfied with the newer versions of Ubuntu, I found myself reinstalling Ubuntu 10.10 again. This time, however, I was able to get everything I wanted to work BEAUTIFULLY on my desktop. Turns out my nice desktop computer is very picky with Linux.
Ubuntu 10.10 is a very nice distro though, it's extremely easy to use but isn't loaded up with all the shiny new crap the new versions come with.
