I fully support flaming, shit-flinging, mockery, and general intellectual chaos; I feel flaming the shit out of someone is a valid way to express your thoughts on their thoughts.
However, there comes a point when it's no longer about the original topic at all (which is sometimes fine: topics change subject naturally), and when the flaming becomes an end in itself, no longer about any topic. When that happens, it's bordering on sheer spam.
Closed briefly. I will re-open this shortly, both to post my reply to nshanin's post on the nutty physicist up there, and to give yon posters a chance to revamp the thread in case there is more to be said. I'm making it a policy to give salvageable threads a "restoration session" before consigning them to the padlock forever.
We'll just let this red-hot crucible of debate cool down a bit.
