Default Chinese Restaurants and MSG

So, do most chinese restaurants just SAY no msg, and then actually use it? Because that's what this place in the same shopping center of my work does. It says "no msg" on the menu, but you go in the back hallway and there's huge empty tubs of msg. Is this common?

If it's in a shopping center...

Well, we'll just say that some crappy chain serving "Chinese" food is to genuine Chinese cuisine what the Big Mac is to a ground chuck hamburger. You're hardly expecting serious preparation, health, flavor, or authenticity, but rather for it to be cheap, speedy, and filling.

FFS!? What's the problem with MSG?

I think the fact that you are eating high-calorie high-fat high-sugar and high-salt fast food is far FAR more damaging to your body than the MSG. Unless you eat a very large amount of MSG over a very long timescale, it won't damage your body.

I'm not really worried about it, I love MSG. I just think it's funny if they're all "we don't use MSG!" and they're just straight up lying.

Ask them about it. I personally like MSG and don't care, but if other stupid people think they're buying an MSG-free product when they're not, then it's YOUR obligation as someone who's in the know to expose the restaurant's lie.

No, it's not his obligation. That would fall on the Better Business Bureau, the Health Department, or other applicable agencies.

I don't think this is indicative of Chinese places as a whole, though.

Chinese restaurants are notoriously deceptive from my experience. Turns out a chinky I went to on numerous occasions got fined a couple thousand pounds for unsafe food practises. Apparently beef steaks were left piled up on the dirty floor and they had a disgustingly dirty staff toilet which lead into the afformentioned disgusting kitchen. Be happy that lieing about MSG is the worst they do.

Yes, it is his obligation. If he fails to do his duty as a member of society then he is a terrible person.

Exclamation Re: Chinese Restaurants and MSG

If you're eating enough crappy Chinese food for MSG to be a problem, you have other issues.

Although some people are allergic to MSG.

Also, Chinese restaurants are completely disgusting behind the scenes. We all still eat there though. Don't ask, don't tell .

As long as my orange chicken taste good I don't care what they use, even if they don't use chicken.

Confused Re: Chinese Restaurants and MSG

I got some weird stuff from a chinese market once, and it came with a little flavor packet that contained ONLY salt and MSG. I was like "wow, here's my chance to taste the REAL DEAL! No fuckin' around here!"

I licked the tip of my finger, stuck it down in the pack, and ate the msg. It was what only could be described as "tongue crack." The only -other- way I can think to describe it would be "electric salt." I did not like it and dumped the stuff out.

Ever since then, I can sort of detect if something tastes wrong- as in its chief flavoring is MSG. It is a cheap and shitty substitute for real flavor. My main problem with it is similar to the problem I have with microwaves, which is that they both cheapen people's respect for real food and its preparation. I mean, with the amout of attention people pay to food now I am surprised we all don't eat little hamster food pellet things loaded with artificial flavors.

You can get a complex taste with peppers, salt, acid, peppercorns, herbs, meat, vegetables, etc. Seaweed can taste very similar to MSG, but it is nutritious as all hell. Trouble is that without MSG, youd be like "I ain't eatin no shitty chicken in light brown turd sauce!!" But put in a little MSG and your dead food comes alive. Then "MMMM, Soooo Good!!"

I plead for all humanity to metaphorically reembrace the coca leaf instead of just smoking food crack. You'll get high, but at what cost.

I forgot what I was on about, and this post is probably huge. Fuck.

In conclusion, just keep going back to your buffet like pigs at their troughs of slop, nothing to see here.

'cept some titties. (. Y .)

Very true. Slant-eyes dump MSG in their food by the bucketload because otherwise it tastes like ass.
