Deploying Next Month

To Afghanistan...Any Advice from people who have been there already, or any other combat zone? As far as I know, we are going to be in a pretty "hot" area, 2 miles from the Paki border. I spent the last 7 months at my unit training on the gun line, then "poof" I am put into a manuever element. Which means we are technically infantry, going outside the wire on patrols everyday. I have had 2 separate instances where we did manuever training since i have been at this unit. And both times we used high back HMMWV's to simulate up armored ones. Am also going to get thrown into the gunners hatch. Note: i have only been in an actual up armored HMMWV 2 times, when I was ordered to move them from point A to B.... Fuck driving those Bowser mobiles.

As far as I know, we will be embedded with Marines.

seems an obvious thing but bring some sunscreen- its about to get really hot out there and the last thing you want on ops is sunburn. Maybe invest in some decent sunglasses as well for when youve got some downtime, its just those little things that make everyday life more bearable.

I honestly don't know. Our leadership is ate the fuck up and barely tells us anything. Most of what I heard is rumors from semi reliable sources. people who are supposedly "in the loop." All I know is that we will be right on the border, and that we are, in fact a manuever platoon. Our battery is already horribly undermanned (probably about 90 soldiers, 4 platoons) and in our platoon we have 2 sections. or, actually they would be squads because now we're infantry. our battery is getting split up as well, each platoon is going to a different part of the country to shoot artillery.

Please don't take offence to my use of words. I already know that if infact we DO get embedded with you guys, we will be treated like the redheaded step-childeren, hahaha.

Thats cool, we are supposed to be leaving sometime next couple months as well we are doing premob training in a week. 90% of the guys in my platoon just got back last year and volunteered again for this mission so most of the guys im going with know their shit. That sucks that your unit is ate up. The one MAJOR piece of advice they gave me is, keep your head up and make yourself a HARD target, meaning don't look like your a shit bag, walk confident and like you know what the fuck you are doing. Because apparently the hadjis are a lot more likely to shoot at you and your unit if they think you are a bunch of retards with your head up your ass.

Have they told you the weather going to be like? Some of the places you go are super hot or super cold because it is pretty high mountains.

Also that kind of sucks for you that you are being turned into infantry. Most infantry guys i've worked with(being that I am one), think that infantry is the best MOS and that theres a reason we get the blue cord. So you might get looked down on a little bit unless you are not a fuck off. Thats just MY expeirence maybe the unit you will be put with will not be all cocky as fuck.

i wish you luck man. one trick i learned is load your M16 mags with 25 rounds when your doing patrols and leaving them loaded for a long time as not to over-stress the spring. if you've got tracers load one in each mag so when you you see a tracer leave your barrel you know you've got five rounds left. once again good luck.

Again, why should I care about these people? After this deployment, I'm done. I can go back to concentrate on getting stoned and laid. I can have a beard and grow my hair long. And maybe one day after I "find Jesus", I'll flip a 180 and become proud of my service and have a family and march in a VFW parade in Fuckville, Utah. Or maybe I'll die of an OD or alcohol poisoning, or maybe I'll run for office, or write a book. Who fucking cares?

Like I said, it's a big clusterfuck sitcom.
