Gandalf isn't really a man, he's some kind of Higher Being who has been trapped inside the form of a man (so is Saruman). That's the implied impression I've gotten from the books and the movies.

That's why comparisons like this are a bit unfair. Gandalf isn't really even a wizard, he's something much greater, he's merely chosen to take on the identity of a wizard in order to play a role amongst the men of the world. He's one of the chess pieces in the back row, where mere mortals cannot sit.

That's why I said Dumbledore. Notice in the books Gandalf never casts one spell. He just does things by force of will. Potter cannot hope to compete with that.
