Re: recovery is good
Thanks, but it is no big deal.
One of my neighbors with no health insurance was recently dignosed with a rare form of bone cancer. That, I think, qualifies as a big deal. Having a few toes lopped off is nothing more than an inconvenience.

Re: recovery is good
I saw the surgeon yesterday, who sliced a bunch of skin off the soles of both feet. The pain is, well, distracting, especially when I walk.
Surgery to amputate a few toes is slated for the first week in April.
Meanhile, I am having severe diarrhea--six or seven episodes recently, between 11:30 pm and 7:30 am--due to potent oral antibiotics to fight off three new infections, including a pesky anerobic bacterium, and staph.

Re: recovery is good
Good luck for the healing process. By the sounds of it you're a pretty secure guy so it doesn't sound like this will be the kind of thing that will crush your soul. Imagine if this happened to an elite athlete or something. That'd be crushing.

Re: recovery is good
Well whatever happened to you I wish you a speedy recovery & the very best on everything else. Sometimes we have to learn life lessons the hard way but if you feel you have gained from this incident then maybe the pain was worth it. I don't know you or your situation so I hope what I'm saying is making sense & applies to you in some way. Again good luck with your healing & in life!

Re: recovery is good
^I kinda had a nervous breakdown. The acute phase lasted two or three days, and I was more or less non compos mentis for weeks.
Luckily, gangrene has not set in, but my left big toe is mummifying (sp?). I will be getting it cut off next month, along with a few other little piggies. No big deal.
I m not my body.
BTW, neither alcohol or dope was involved--all drugs were either scrip of OTC. Good thing--had I added booze to the mix, I have no doubt I would have perished. Quit drinking May 23, 2003.

Re: recovery is good
Do you know if the surgery is going to badly impact your mobility? i've heard that toes are actually really important for balance. i wish you a speedy recovery tho, i've come to realize recently the importance of good health. damaged a nerve in my arm and use of the hand is just now returning after three months.

Re: recovery is good
^Got it covered. After the foot heals from the surgery, I am supposed to see a podiatrist who will fit me with some sort of prosthetic toe or something.

The toes are only really required for standing for long periods of time, plus moving forward speed. Otherwise, it's all down to the inner ear. Inner ear damage will fuck up your balance a fair bit. Think of them as gyroscopes, just tiny.

The inner ear is a funky little mechanism. I occasionally get my eustachian tubes clogged up (clears with some decongestants), and it manifests itself with some funky symptoms. I'll wake up with ear pain randomly, and a lot of times i have these dreams where my balance is all fucked up and i cant walk. I dont actually know if the dreaming thing is caused by it, but it seems like they might be related especially considering i only have pain in the middle of the night.

This morning, I managed to open a package of cheese with my bare hands for the first time in like seven weeks.
Probably never do the 880 high hurdles, though. Or play the violin.

Yep.
In my book, however, mental and spiritual health is more important than physical health. We are not our bodies.

You are so right about that. I'd be kinda pissed about becoming an amputee but I'm vain as fuck. I've dealt with my share of medical issues though and faced my death a few times over.
Fear and pain are the worst on the mental health. Even if you freak out or break down at some point even if just to yourself, know you are strong for pushing forward and being brave enough to keep living. Pain and suffering are just unpleasant reminders you're still strong and kicking.
At least you're not vain and getting your skull hacked in two for a nasopharyngeal angiofibroma that has uncontrollable bleeding. Yay for metal in my skull giving me migraine headaches. Well, at least I'm alive. Ha...
Keep the spirits up old man, you've lived a hell of a life from what I've read so keep on living it.

I did break down big time exactly once in the last two months, in the welfare office. I could not fucking deal with the mountains of paperwork and their illogical and incessant demands for documentation.
Department of Public Assistance, my Aunt Fanny. More like Department of Public Humiliation.

Yeah shit happens and the government, especially the US government, likes to bust people's balls they really shouldn't. Yeah, I have a brother with MDD, a rather nasty male linked type of MD, and they make you parade around showing all your current weakness to the world and then repeatedly make you "perform" or rather be unable to for them to even begin to give a fuck about help you. God help you if you don't have all your dates and numbers right or you're missing any kind of random ass info the decide is mandatory.
They just about want to see you roll over into a grave which is total bullshit.

Oh, to hell with that dualism bullshit. "Spiritual" is a silly, Dr. Seussian nonsense word, and mental and physical are the same thing. If I take care of my body, my brain (mind, spirit, soul, etc.) will reward the entire system. If I go for a run, my body will be exercised and endorphins and oxygen will stimulate my brain, allowing me to think more clearly and intelligently. It's all one interconnected system.

This is how I currently live my life - although exercise/physical stimuli aren't the only way to release endorphins; with the right attitude, I (or anyone) could be happy as a brain in a jar. The physical makeup of your brain is quite definitely who you are, though.

Back to topic--yesterday--for the first time--I manageed to open a can with my bare hands.
I still need crutches to walk any distance and use the crip carts in box stores, and have a lot of trouble managing shirt buttons.

Not really. Here in the colonies, most tins have these tabs on them--you kinda fold them back and peel it open.

The latest--I go to Anchorage this afternoon to get the stitches taken out. I am frankly not looking forward to it--I imagine the process will be painful.
At least I should get another scrip for pain meds out of it.
