Default 1.9L Turbo Diesel- RWD

Hey, wondering what options I have for a RWD trans to use behind a 1.6 or 1.9L Turbo VW diesel. I have a couple engines sitting around and I would like to put into something. Thanks.

You can put anything into ANYTHING it, as long as you have the money and the knowledge

Oh don't worry I have the money and fab skills. Just not sure what transmission would be easiest to adapt

A Toyota transmission? I've heard of guys throwing the 1.6s into the older hilux models - apparently it's possible to adapt the stock transmission.

Or you could throw one in a Vanagon

Thanks for the info, Township! I'm going to check into that.

I learned that an Audi Quattro transmission will bolt to the 1.9 or 1.6 Diesels (I'm assuming a 5 speed, I believe the 6 speed was meant for 6cyl engines)

To make the AWD put all of the power to the rear wheels, you have to weld the center diff inside the transmission.

Subtle changes are made to clutch diameter I think and different shift boxes and mounts between different transmissions.

Unfortunately, I doubt I can find an Audi Quattro around here for a reasonable price, lol. So I shall look further into the Toyota!

Really? Old Audis are usually fairly cheap because nobody wants to maintain them.. the old 5 cyls especially. At least that's the case here.

...but the Toyota option might still be a better idea.

Older vehicles in general here are scarcer than a hen's teeth. Its probably a combination of living where every older car is rusting to shit thanks to road salt, and having no emissions testing at all so people drive old beaters till they literally fall apart.

At least I'm confident I can find a wealth of 80s and 90s toyotas in the scrapyard..

Can you tell me more about this VW diesel/Audi trans combo?

There are plenty of Audi's no one wanted to take care of in the savage yards around me, so acquiring a transmission wouldnt be hard.
Hence why Im curious about the whole VW/Audi combo thing...
Do you have any links?

Actually it was my buddy (old VW mechanic) telling me this but from what I can gather via wikipedia, the 1994–1997 Audi C4 had the option of an "inline four 1.9 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI)". However the later model C5 had the TDI as well, but only FWD. Doesn't seem to say what transmission was behind it, but I'm sure I can find out..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_A6

Probably not all that helpful, but I plan on doing more research on this later so I'll try and post more detailed findings.

Hmm... Can it be any of the 5speeds, if more than one? Or would it have to be the specific one from the TDI version?

I know theres Audi's, but I dont know if theres any diesel Audi's. I'll have to check later.

I'll see what I can dig up for ya.. If I had to guess I'd say you'll still need the diesel bellhousing even if they used the same tranny for other engines.
Reason I say this, I'm using a late 70s/ early 80s RX-7 five-speed in my 1989 Mazda truck. Basically identical tranny but i still needed the trucks bellhousing.
Could be hard to scare one up for the audi.. I'm not even 100% sure if the TDI was offered in north america in an Audi, at least I've yet to see one.
