You know, a lot of people say that with the conservatism (social, anyways) of the black community (Christian church, overwhelming anti gay sentiment, tradition of military service, etc), more would be expected to support the modern day Republican party, but LBJ and Kennedy nixed that with the Voting Rights Act. The southern strategy turned many blacks against it as well, you've got people like Goldwater and Reagan running around talking about States' Rights (read, in the South, if you're black, you ain't votin') and people picked up on that shit. That's why even middle-upper class blacks overwhelmingly support Democrats. It wasn't always like that, though, before the 1960s blacks were pretty Republican.
