The phytoplankton of the ocean produces over 50% of the O2. But if the Russian taiga was destroyed there would be severe effects on the planet's carbon sink. Modern nukes, typically fusion, don't have radioactive fallout. In fact, they could even be beneficial to the environment. The resulting dust cloud would help cool Earth by a few fraction of a percent degree.

Russia's not very far behind with military technology from the US. They've got some awesome stealth aircraft like the Sukhoi PAK FA, Yakovlev Yak-135, and PAK DA.

They're also about to replace the aging AK-74M with the next generation AK-12



Not the most advanced assault rifle, but still an improvement considering the AK-74M has been in service since the Soviet Unions collapse, and even then it's only a cheap modernization of a rifle from the 70's. It's about time they got picatinny rails and collapsible/retractable stocks.

So it sounds like they use sensors that detect blasts that are in the magnitude of a nuclear explosion. I bet that means a meteor impact or aerial comet explosion would be enough to trigger it.

The system lies dormant until someone turns it on. And it does have at least a 15 minute delay time. The system looks at 4 different criteria that are unique to a nuclear blast, and if those are detected it then confirms if comm networks are still connected to the war room where if someone doesn't turn it off within 15m-1hr it activates and fires

no i'm saying that the math isn't as straight forward as just counting to o2 production of the trees and minusing that from the worldwide production. taking out that forest would have other knock on effects.

and anyway lets face it, russia aren't going to do that as they would be the first to be affected and would lose out as much, if not more than the rest of us.

well that forest isn't getting cut down over night, probably talking months/years at the least. and unless they are concreting it over as they go, which is unlikely and would take 10x longer, new fauna is very soon going to start re growing in place of the old.

but even despite that, increases in co2 and drops in o2 would gradually affect the animal and plant world on a global scale. animal life would decrease a little and plant life would increase some. very soon the balance will level out and the human race would probably barely notice anything. i mean lets face it, we're not even talking 10% of the worlds vegetation here are we.
