Inventions or novel ideas and how to develop them?
Over the years my days of kicking back and getting stoned have led to me conceptualizing several new and unique items or business models that I truly feel could be profitable. While I'm no capitalist, I'd love to make a quick buck off of these ideas just to support my ass.
I'm not going to go into any detail about my concepts, but I will say my two most promising ideas are in the fields of advertising and health care. What can I do with these concepts or inventions?

Since everything has pretty much been invented other than in the science field, your best bet is taking something people use or need, and make it better.

no no dont worry I already have the ideas, I just personally dont want to develop the details. Can I patent something and then sell that?

You can't patent a process.

Do it yourself before somebody else thinks of it. Or - start a company and pay someone else to run it for you.

yes you can, its called a utility patent.
OP, you basically need a patent lawyer to get any kind of patent...it is very complicated and expensive. A normal person can get a patent themselves, but on the patent office website is says "Patents are complicated and it is strongly suggested you use a professional lawyer" or something to that effect. Even if you patent something, you are responsible for enforcing your patent. There is no patent police running around making sure that no one infringes on your patent. Then, if you do find someone infringing on you patent, you need to sue them in civil court, at your expense (you can sue for legal fees+damages).
The process for getting a patent is long, but at least once you apply for a patent (and you are awaiting approval) you can say "patent pending" and you are retroactively afforded all the legal rights to the patent if its granted.
For a lawyer to handle a patent, you're looking at $10k (at least)

Re: Inventions or novel ideas and how to develop them?
Hmm, never heard of that. It seems they only exist in the US.
I have a couple of patents which were registered by my university while I was studying there. It's a horrible process, but at least it didn't cost me anything.
Incidentally, if you describe even the basic outline your idea to anyone in the public domain, it becomes un-patentable - so keep your lips sealed.

Re: Inventions or novel ideas and how to develop them?
Yeah, my school has a patent system that handles it for free as well. ^ It's very nice. I hope to get some sorted out within the next year or so. But it is a pain in the ass.
OP, the patenting process is expensive as hell, as someone else noted. Depending on the kind of idea it is, you could implement it yourself.

yeah, its just a form of an intellectual patent. I would think most countries have a comparable patent. In the US there are 3 main types of patents: design, utility, and plants. Pretty much everything (like 90%) falls into a utility patent.

Who got a patent? Not Zuckerberg if I'm remembering correctly. He just stole it. Are you talking about the twins? Can you even patent a social networking site? Seems ridiculous, why didn't Myspace sue? Lol

Ok so can I get a loan to cover the processing and legal fees? What would that entail?

In Europe you can patent the technology behind the process, but you can't patent the process itself. For example, you can patent a machine that makes a new type of steel, but you can't patent the chemical reactions that form the steel itself - so anyone can build your steel so long as they can come up with a new way of doing it. As far as I know, you can't patent a business model.
Or at least, that's how it was explained to me. I haven't looked into it any further since I'm not a businessman.
edit - Wiki says:
Quote:
European Patent Convention
Under the European Patent Convention, "Schemes, rules and methods for (...) doing business" are not regarded as being inventions and are not patentable, "to the extent that a European patent application or European patent relates to such subject-matter or activities as such".[26]
But if a new method solves a technical, rather than a purely administrative, problem then it may indeed be patentable. (For example, an improved design of letter-franking machine).

Looks like the law is a grey area in US law, too. Good luck with it, anyway.

All patent law is pretty gray, thats why cock-sucking lawyers make bank for using Google Patent Search. In the US, you need to prove that its a "novel" and useful idea. Its seems like there is some disparity between euro and us laws, I found this on the us patent office website:
Quote:
|
The word “process” is defined by law as a process, act or method, and primarily includes industrial or technical processes.
|
As far as getting a loan, that's tough, but doable in a few different ways. I'm pretty sure nobody will give you a loan for a patent per say (unless they take a ownership interest), but you can get money for the patent indirectly...
1. Start a business (probably an LLC), file for business loan
2. Personal loan
3. Patent investment firms (they take a large % to front the cash)

Take it to the grave unless you have the money for a patent and prototype. Fuck society.
