Default Whey protein and acne

My GF is against taking whey protein because she thinks it affects her skin badly. Today she sent me this
Quote:
Whey
Whey protein is a popular form of protein powder. A study published in the June 2005 edition of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" notes that whey protein powder stimulates the release of insulin from your pancreas. High levels of insulin promotes the production of new skin cells -- which can clog pores -- the "Medicine Today" reports. The authors of the "Medicine Today" paper advise that people with acne should avoid dairy products, including whey protein.

Although the exact mechanism of acne is unknown, it is associated with the hormonal changes influenced by insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1 for short. IGF-1 is a growth-promoting hormone with a similar structure to insulin. In adults, it plays an important role in anabolic processes, such as muscle growth. Although whey is a protein, it is a potent insulin and IGF-1 stimulator, primarily because mammalian milk is designed to promote growth.
Closer Look
IGF-1 levels appear to have a stronger effect on acne in women

If you have skin issues, you should avoid whey. Don’t use whey-based bodybuilding supplements (pea and rice protein are fine), and don’t drink Nestlé’s Quick. Cutting back on milk may also help if you have active acne breakouts.
Im using 100% whey isolate, is this really something to be concerned about? Should she use rice protein to avoid complications?
And is whey protein considered a dairy product?

Mad Re: Whey protein and acne

that sounds like bullshit to me. Ive got some mild skin problems after I started lifting but i think is all just from sweating more or testosterone.
fucking everyone uses whey protein and they all seem to do it without issue. I mean its just protein.
Whey protein is cheaper than most others and most others arent as good anyway. I wouldnt buy anything weird like rice protein.

It's all protein, but I think the difference is whether or not they contain complete proteins; egg whites, whey and soy isolate are all perfect in that regard, while most meats and fish are almost as good, along with spirulina, hempseed, etc.

Having too much protein at once isn't advisable, a lot of protein shakes have too much per serving and IIRC the human body can only digest up to 10g per hour and it will excrete the rest.

http://www.consumerreports.org/healt...need/index.htm

If you plan on switching, either rice or pea protein are both excellent, but lacking in certain amino acids. By combining them you can actually make up for this very well.

Quote:
Rice protein is commonly mixed with pea protein powder. Rice protein is high in the sulfur-containing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, but low in lysine. Pea protein, on the other hand, is low in cysteine and methionine but high in lysine. Thus, the combination of rice and pea protein offer a superior amino acid profile that is comparable to dairy or egg proteins, but without the potential for allergies or intestinal issues that some users have with those proteins. Moreover, the light, fluffy texture of pea protein tends to smooth out the strong, chalky flavor of rice protein.

Grin Re: Whey protein and acne

It's never been a problem for me.

I look after my skin pretty well. I don't have a strict routine but every few days I'll use an exfoliator in the shower, and I use a face wash every day. If it gets too oily or greasy during the day I use a cotton pad and an alcohol-based wash (not suitable for dry skin but it freshens mine up perfectly). None of that is much effort or expense, and my skin has been practically perfect for years. I didn't notice any change at all when I started using whey.

If you don't have a predisposition towards acne and you know how to take care of yourself, I wouldn't worry in the slightest.

Excess protein can affect SOME people negatively. Not just with skin but with inflammation as well. Others will be just fine. There is no universal diet that is perfect for everyone. There is no direct correlation between whey protein and acne, though.

It appears this is the results of one single study

In my opinion , it is best to refrain from assumptions until 30 or so studies are in the mix

Three shakes with three scoops a day? 270g of protein in addition to your normal diet?

Are you a 350lbs competitive powerlifter, or just wasting money by over-consuming whey? What's your bodyweight? That sounds like far too much protein.

I have never had any acne problems with whey, I was predisposed and have been using whey for years. I did react initially to creatine when I first used it when I was 17. You may react to if you're using high quantities and your body isn't used to it. After a while you should get used to it unless you have lactose intolerance. If you don't there are so many different types of powdered protein available it doesn't even matter.

If the powdered proteins don't agree with you, start eating more protein from actual food sources.

20 - 25g of protein per scoop... About 90kg 13%bf. Too much? I don't believe in getting too much protein.

Some whey protein will produce a minimal insulin response when compared to, say, eating almost anything.

That excerpt is bullshit. If she want to avoid high insulin levels, she should avoid sweets. It draws very little connection between whey protein and acne. I haven't looked into it, but there may be a correlation between insulin levels and acne, but I doubt it. But it draws NO connection between insulin levels and whey, but merely says that dairy products should be avoided. Milk will raise insulin and therefore IGF levels, yes. But that doesn't mean whey will have the same effect.

How about you show her an article showing the benefits of whey protein, and she try it for herself? Instead of just relying on this half-assed excerpt that should be totally disregarded imo. If she develops acne in response to whey protein, then *drum roll* she can stop taking it!

Solid mass, but there are a lot of very educated people who do believe in getting too much protein. Kidney problems is at the extreme end of the spectrum, but there are optimum nutrient macros for growth (variable depending on the person, obviously) and that much protein won't hit them.

A lot of that protein will just pass straight through you. There are limits to what our body can absorb.

*shrug* It won't kill you, it'll probably just cost you twice as much money as you need to spend.

It depends on age (if you're still growing, i.e. adolescent, you need a lot more), training intensity and goals (I assume gaining lean mass efficiently, which means adding some bodyfat too; cutting or maintenance will be different), but 1g/lb is generally plenty according to pretty much any source (more if you're on a serious bulk, like 1.5g/lb). It's not healthy to get too much of your calories from protein at the expense of carbs/fat (keto diets are another story).

my general diet is 3 scrambled eggs and a it of turkey keilbasa for breakfast, then a protein/greens shake with about 60g of protein and wheatgrass and other phyto nutrients, then beef, carrot, potato stew for lunch, two burgers with only ketchup for dinner, then after that ill have a stick of 5 grain italian bread and yogurt throughout the night till sleepy time.

sound good? any additions you'd suggest?

also, i have no trouble falling asleep, but wake up constantly throughout the night and in the morning i am starving. is this a diet related issue or something else?

Perhaps you should avoid the simple carbs towards the end of the night, as insulin levels are supposed to be dropping. Buckwheat, oatmeal, and cottage cheese may be good ideas. Casein is a slow burning protein and contains morphine which will help you sleep. Food lower on the glycemic index may also help you not be so hungry in the morning.
