Nonsense, Marx said it.
BTW, I added this to the end: Fuck the rich and fuck money, we need workers to take over the means of production so we can all be rich and have money.

It is a worn out argument, usually made by middle-class people suckered into believing that if they work hard they can be rich and wealthy and look down on the little people too.
You post anecdotal opinion about a possible poor kid with stellar grades and a possible rich kid who studies and graduates.
These are fabricated. These are conjectures. These are make-believe.

Re: Has your exposure to the upper class and it's benefits made you jaded towards suc
I have some input, since I'm a first-gen immigrant but I attended 3rd-8th grade at a $30k per year private school (Scholarship based on merit, and they needed some token broke ass Russian so the school wasn't 100% jew). Now I live pretty frugally, but I'm comfortable. That's 50k a year min. gross on a 2.5 person household, non-metro, high cost state. I gotta say I used to think even grossing 50 was good...
So as a kid I had not shit. We didn't even have a place for like a year. Then of course we had to live in shitty apartments, and even the SSDI collectors had more toys and clothes and shit than I did. My parents busted ass all day and night, and I would constantly have to go with my mom to clean rich houses since she couldn't afford a sitter.
Then came that school. All of a sudden I'm sleeping over in mansions and going to the movies in a benz, just stuck on how nice it was. I also wasn't aware that all the really rich kids were jewish, heh. Honestly most of the kids there were cool... but no one ever came to stay at my hovel ya know? And I wouldn't have wanted them to. Plus there was kind of a forced friendly integration there, after all the whole grade was some 25-30 people.
Finally a house and adjustment to public school, and a more average existence.... By which I mean drugs ruined my life and dreams. So much for SAT scores.
Anyway you better believe I want what I got a mouthful of then. Would I waste my whole life working for it? Fuck no. My friend's mom had serious nervous breakdowns because she was one of those 'yells on the phone all the time at my minions' types. Some of the rich people were cool, some weren't. Hmm now that I think about it seems like the less wealthy and non jew kids had the coolest parents.
It plays down to this: Seeing the wealth made me want the wealth, but living the poverty gave me a real appreciation for what it meant (or didn't). But then we haven't really put numbers on it other than 250k+/5ppl. 50k/year gross would let just me live pretty well semi-rurally (by my standards). 100k a year or so would be the most I realistically cared to attain if it involved tons of work/life to do so.
Being super rich would just confuse me. I'd end up sitting on a bunch of investments, and simultaneously be pissing money. I could maybe do OK for a while but honestly I'd end up dead quick one way or another.
Would I remotely step on people I don't know/don't care about to make huge money? Yes. All day long. Not with any malice really, but more out of self interest. I suppose that means I can be bought, but only if I'm wiling (Yes, I have been attacked for refusing to be conned out of a dollar).
OH AND EDIT: IME it's wayyyyyy easier to find cool rich dudes than chicks. I've met maybe one cool rich chick in NYC, and she's not much of a looker. This would apply to people under 25, again only IME. I'm sure that with age more guys become douchebags too.

Those with capital invest it into producing more capital. For those of without we are forced to sell our labor power to survive, with the motivation being "work hard and ye too shall be rich one day too", which we all know is bullshit due to the laws of capitalism.

The people I fabricated are rarely interesting or hate-able enough to have articles published about them, it happens all the time but is uninteresting.
You are mad Bill Gates got in the software industry before you so he fucked you over? That article mentions how some thought that it was unfair for him to bundle Internet Explorer with Windows, did you have a competing browser you were developing at the time which he railroaded? No, some other wealthy person probably did but what do you care about them?
Your facebook link is broken, Mark Zuckerburg is probably a prick - so what? No one gives a shit he uses your personal info to target adverts to you, or they wouldn't use his service.
Edison and Jobbs are dead, maybe they were dick heads. You want me to find articles about a bunch of people who died that were disadvantaged and "made something" of themselves?

It sounds like you're implying that capitalism is about people doing bad things to get rich, or that doing bad certainly the most reliable and fastest route to immense wealth, while also being entirely acceptable in capitalism.

I can't remember who said that for the life of me, but it's true as fuck. Rich people, on the other hand, got rich through exploiting those that do work, cheating them of the produce of their labor, or worse, trading in financial products that serve no purpose whatsoever other than to produce more wealth for those that already have it. That's not just at all. Wealth isn't obtained through hard work, it's obtained through destruction and cheating. The honest person will never be wealthy.

AHAHAHHHA ive never heard a bigger load of shit in my life!
you really need a reality check mate. apart from the old-money corrupt motherfuckers who have weaseled their way into control over the reserve banks of the world, set themselves up with tax free havens to live in, buy out corrupt politicians, slave labour in 3rd world countries etc etc (im talking rothschild, rockafeller etc, english and austrian aristocracy), the overwhelming majority of wealthy people are self made.
the old saying goes "the father makes it, and the sons spend it". most money doesnt make it past a few generations. there have been a few of those stories in this thread alone!
anyway, apart from those mentioned above, wealthy people make their money not by "cheating them out of the produce of their labour" (whatever the fuck that means, i work on an island doing conservation work, should i be payed in the satisfaction of knowing a few quokkas wont choke on garbage today?, meanwhile someone in a production line in armadale takes home a few iphones each day for his contribution? (hint; the idea of currency came about for this exact reason)) the wealthy make money by exploiting the INSANE GREED of the average person. steve jobs would not have ANY money if people didnt want to pay $2500 for a stylishly designed laptop, carlos slim would not be wealthy if mexicans werent the most text messaging-est cunts on the planet. meanwhile, if they redistributed all of their net wealth, everyone on the planet would get approx $5 each. yeah they have really been raping us of our wealth .
(and here comes the my father blah blah blah story)
my father grew up in a rural part of Australia. he was literally born on a dirt floor, because my pregnant grandmother was unable to ride her horse to the hospital. he went to a christian brothers boarding school where most people sent aborigine children (it was free in other words) and stayed in school until he was 12. he started life as a carpenter, then became a rigger and traveled the world with his brothers working with a circus. later he bought his own crane hoping to start his own business and ended up losing everything he owned. after he worked at a company installing insulation in peoples houses, and later tried to start his own insulation company, and failed. he then worked some more as a rigger and saved up enough to get a loan on a small bar. he worked that bar successfully until he gave it up when he started having children. working as a rigger again, he had a cushy job until at age 52, he was layed off and again had to start with nothing.
so he got a few million dollars in loans and took a final chance. he bought a hotel/bar that was being undervalued in the middle of bumfuck nowhere mining town (seriously, i doubt that in north america you could comprehend how isolated this place is) he would get up at 4 in the morning EVERY DAY to cook breakfast for the hotel patrons before they went to work at 5 o clock, then continue working, as a barman/chef/maintenance man/manager/accountant until each night he would close, lockup and clean the bar at midnight. this went on for about 8 years until he had payed off the loans and could afford to get more staff. these days he does have tens of millions of dollars, we own many beachfront houses including one on a private island in Indonesia (island is not ours obvs), 9 cars, whatever the fuck else he feels like buying.
this was all bought and payed for by his own hard work, taking risks, and the fact that Australians like to drink and will pay 9 dollars for a beer.
who the fuck was he exploiting there mate? who exactly was he stepping on in order to get himself ahead?
in the real world, this is a typical story of how people make their money. right around the world, there are dozens of people doing the same thing each day, because they have ambition, they work hard and they take risks. thats all it takes guys. easier said than done though.
EDIT: in order to stay on topic, i would like to say that i have not really been exposed to many wealthy people in my lifetime, but from those that i have met, they have all been hardworking self made people who i could look up to as businessmen and as the kind of good blokes you would want to have a beer with. if i could acheive half of their success, i would be content with my life.

Re: Has your exposure to the upper class and it's benefits made you jaded towards suc
Most wealthy people aren't like your father, though, and I honestly don't believe a small businessman who owns a bar/hotel in a "middle of bumfuck nowhere town" is worth in excess of $10 million...on the other hand, he was ripping people off for $9 per drink, so there's a bit of exploitation right there. The fucker probably watered the shit down too. Try again, mate.
Like I said, you don't get rich without cheating your employees, or consumers, whether it be from denying them benefits, underpaying them, trying to find ways (lobbyists) to avoid paying their fair share of taxes which results in average citizens paying more in tax than multibillion dollar corporations, manipulating people to get them to pay more than they have to for things they don't need. You underestimate the power of advertising, which can be more adequately described as flat out fraud and lying. Don't forget filling your food and beverages with shit to make people physically ADDICTED to the stuff. Behind every one of your success stories and "self made men" is a motherfucker who didn't give a shit and was willing to shaft someone.

Re: Has your exposure to the upper class and it's benefits made you jaded towards suc
I looked up the Forbes rich company list the other day - I've been arguing a lot recently about work and its true worth.
The CEO of Exxon-Mobil gets a salary of ~5 million a year, which is peanuts as far a I am concerned...I'd have figured it'd be at least say 100 million dollars.
This is coming from someone that believes he could easily survive off $18,000p.a.
I'm very much 'jaded' towards wealthy lifestyles, I think it's a pointless pursuit that wastes life and true potential.
My very simple comparison is food - Expensive 'fine' dining and hospitality. It's too much, how many people say they get enjoyment from cooking? I can cook, it's a skill and I don't get the enjoyment from it that others claim they do...but the way I see it I am cooking expensive meals for myself every night, but they aren't expensive because I'm doing it myself - Might cost $20 for the ingredients, in a restaurant it could cost >$100 - I'm living the lifestyle, I'm just not being waited on hand and foot and dining in a stuffy environment with pretentious dining settings/music/artwork - I'm not comfortable in these atmospheres anyway.
I also think the 'rich' don't take risks, they dress in overly expensive threads and are afraid to ruffle them.
Anyhow that's already said the rich lifestyle is shallow etc I agree with and shake my head that OP asked the question then didn't like the initial, honest, replies.

Lol, their salaries aren't their main money source, some of the fucks have the nerve to think people are dumb and take only $1 a year. It's the dividends from and value of their ownership shares in the corporation that are the main killers.

Buy into the system or be outcast because you don't. It's your choice, and be glad you have a choice. They don't in North Korea. You can't always get what you want. This is coming from somebody who always was and still is poor as fuck. There's a lot of money to be made in the first world if you're smart, and in reality we all have the same potential for intelligence.
Oh you got screwed because you weren't born rich? No, you got lucky because you have the chance to earn it. I'll tell you with honesty that the people who work hard to get what they want are personally rewarded much greater and enjoy it much more.
Other people are bad because they want stuff and you don't? So other people are bad because their ideal life is different?
Don't like Wall Street? Bomb a fucking building if you hate it so bad. But you don't, just sit around and bitch like a woman.

Kings do not become kings by themselves.
If the poor rise up together, declaring that they do not want any money, kings will be overthrown.
However, the poor seek money so that they may become kings themselves, which in turn only strengthens the position of the current kings.
They cannot escape this fruitless paradox. Kings cannot be defeated as long as the poor desire money.

Whether they want to or not, people end up using up most of their lives for money. They are eroding their own existence and lives just for that. They're exchanging their own existence for money. Whether you're a laborer, businessman, or a bureaucrat, everyone is trading their lives for money.

i was hoping you would say something like that.
so you honestly think there are more carlos slims in the world than people like my dad? go outside, go meet some people man. there are 10,000x more people who are worth 10m than those worth 100m.
again, go outside, infact maybe you should try and get outside of the US. the "middle of bumfuck nowhere town" is infact THE most highly payed town in the world, average earning for mine workers here is a 100k+ wage. if anybody had a problem paying $9 a beer they would be laughed out of the bar. even still, a majority of them are willing to pay over that for a premix can bourbon/rum and coke. watering down beer? what the fuck are you talking about?
our employees are payed well above the average for their position, infact they may be some of the most highly payed bar bitches in the world. we house them, feed them and clothe them for $90 a week, because most of them are transient workers or backpackers (most australians are too spoilt/lazy to want to work here, although we would really like them to). they get payed around 1200 a week. our chefs are Phillipino, we got them in on special working visas and are sponsoring them so that they can get australian citizenship, we got them because australian chefs are the fucking scum of the earth seemingly. lazy/dirty/usually drunk, we eventually got sick of fucking trying. so we pay them more than we payed any chefs in the past. we also are helping them to get their families over and are actually paying for one of their kids to go to school (i dont agree with this tbh, my dad is a soft touch). we dont give employees benefeits in this country, that is their own problem. and there is public health care here anyway.
we pay all the tax we are LEGALLY required to.
you dont believe he would be worth >10m? thats fine. when i finish exams in a week ill be flying to nusa lembongan and i really wont be giving a fuck if some nigger cripple beleives me.
 try again, mate.

That's the smartest thing I've seen Aki say. Instead of challenging their oppression at the root, everyone wants to be an oppressor. It's a clever system for those at the top.

again, go outside, infact maybe you should try and get outside of the US. the "middle of bumfuck nowhere town" is infact THE most highly payed town in the world, average earning for mine workers here is a 100k+ wage. if anybody had a problem paying $9 a beer they would be laughed out of the bar. even still, a majority of them are willing to pay over that for a premix can bourbon/rum and coke. watering down beer? what the fuck are you talking about?
our employees are payed well above the average for their position, infact they may be some of the most highly payed bar bitches in the world. we house them, feed them and clothe them for $90 a week, because most of them are transient workers or backpackers (most australians are too spoilt/lazy to want to work here, although we would really like them to). they get payed around 1200 a week. our chefs are Phillipino, we got them in on special working visas and are sponsoring them so that they can get australian citizenship, we got them because australian chefs are the fucking scum of the earth seemingly. lazy/dirty/usually drunk, we eventually got sick of fucking trying. so we pay them more than we payed any chefs in the past. we also are helping them to get their families over and are actually paying for one of their kids to go to school (i dont agree with this tbh, my dad is a soft touch). we dont give employees benefeits in this country, that is their own problem. and there is public health care here anyway.
we pay all the tax we are LEGALLY required to.
you dont believe he would be worth >10m? thats fine. when i finish exams in a week ill be flying to nusa lembongan and i really wont be giving a fuck if some nigger cripple beleives me.
 try again, mate.

I am genuinely interested in knowing about this definition of 'wealthy' - You say 350k with a household of 5 (in the US)...what about someone living by themselves?
Obviously I don't think it's worth sacrificing a 'large part' of myself (my time? my existence) to 'chase' that dream...I don't think it's worth it even if it wasn't a matter of chasing that dream but being guaranteed it.

Re: Has your exposure to the upper class and it's benefits made you jaded towards suc
It hasn't jaded me.
The people I've met from the upper class are all very human, with different challenges and different perspectives on life.(The people I'm thinking of are those earning 100K+/year)No matter how much money you have, you can only drive one car at a time, and sleep in one bed at night.
I'm sure there are people who have made their fortunes "exploiting" others, but most of them were just really passionate people who embraced their dreams and wanted to tailor their own future much worse then sipping on haterade and watching life pass them by.They put blood, sweat and tears into working their dreams, and constantly kept their eyes open for every chance to advance themselves no matter how small.24/7 on the grind, soldiers building their future.
It's easy to be judgmental of people who are perceived as "successful" but they often choose to work hard for it, harder then most people will ever push themselves.People find success in different ways, and even the ones who were some of the more shady characters share similar traits of success as some of the MLM superstars, tradespeople and different entrepreneurs I've met. They love their work, practice self discipline where it counts, and view challenges as opportunities instead of setbacks.
These people all networked and were constantly on look out for others who were on the come up, willing to match their efforts or at least meet them on the same page.Too bad it's easier to stand on the sidelines and judge them instead of grabbing the horse by the reigns and take some chances. With so many people in the upper class, the difference is much greater to do with attitude then their pocket book.

no, it got me into engineering. nice try trying to dodge that bullet though. when all else fails, correct their grammar eh? was my last post illegible? maybe i should spell things phonetically so you americans can understanddd it derp.
arent you on benefeits? arent you a cripple? how can you talk about exploitation of labor if you've never worked a hard day in your life? go work on a minesite as a driller/blaster or a turner-fitter or heavy diesal mechanic and then come back into the discussion. all of these people work hard, all of them getting rich. evil people! obviously their lives are meaningless.

Dig a big hole and aid in the destruction of the planet to get paid a lot of money simply because you run a high risk of dying on of because of the job? No thanks. I'm not going to die for money.

Nah. I'd rather be a fucking unemployable drunken wretch than die for the benefit of the chairman of the board of a mining company.

There's a lot of money to be made in the first world if you were a dipshit shot out of a vagina onto a golden platter inside one of 20 mansions your family owns.
How can you call that fair? Should people be punished with having less their entire life because they made the mistake of choosing to be born into a poor family instead of a wealthy one?

There's a lot of money to be made if you hate humanity and care only about yourself and are willing to exploit/take advantage of others. Being shot onto a golden platter helps though.

I refuse to sell/rent my life for a fraction of what is mine and then be treated like shit/contract some disease/get laid off so they can make a larger return on top of it, so I'm unemployable. I'm not stupid. I've worked in the financial industry, so I guess I've been jaded by seeing how little of a fuck they give about people and don't want to put myself in that position.

Re: Has your exposure to the upper class and it's benefits made you jaded towards suc
with my current career i'm making more than most folks my age right now, but i'll be decently set up in 2 years or so when i have my boss's job. In ten years i will be very wealthy. All of my bosses, who i hang out with once in a while, are rich. They drive 100k dollar cars, have fantastically hot wives and do cocaine that they keep in mahogany boxes off of marble tables at their vacation homes or on their yachts. Being upper middle class is boring. Being in the .5% looks like the most fun shit in the world, I cant wait.

I do work for myself.
I'd define success as making as many people happy as possible.

they dont pay you that much because you have a risk of dying you tragic little fuck. they pay you cause its fucking hard work in a mine pit which is 60 degrees celcius, covered in red dirt and dust. for 12 hours a day. i cbf looking up the figures but the amount of health and safety regulations on any mine site here is fucking CHOKING PRODUCTIVITY. believe me its ridiculous i wont get into it.
its called hard work, modern civilization was built on top of it. in past days we would have thrown lazy fucking cripples like you off cliffs as an offering to the gods.

Modern civilisation is built on centuries of stolen land and dead bodies. The fellas back then worked hard, but they didn't get shit but more work and a million ways to die.
If you want to throw yourself into a mine and coat yourself in all sorts of nasty shit to pour more money into the laps of destructive capitalists with nobody's interest in mind but their own, be my guest. I'm not that stupid, and I sure as fuck am not a mule.
