should I get a mac book or a PC?
I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. I've been using PC's just about my whole life but I was thinking about going with a mac book. If I do decide to get a PC should I go with a Dell or a HP? I will be using this computer for programs and surfing the web and very little gaming.
Can someone reccomend me a decent laptop, also how do mac laptops compare with PC's?

Mac is way better. You just get more for your money. It's awesome too. You can upgrade various parts very easily! This can't be done with PC. Mac can run all programs. The list goes on and on really.

Yeah if you're not gaming may as well go for a mac. They're a bit overpriced though, paying for the name.

Re: should I get a mac book or a PC?
What kind of programs are you looking for?
If you're willing to pay more money (likely) to get a Mac and do slightly less, and none of this affects you - I would go for Mac. I have one, and there's nothing I want to do that I can't. I prefer my gaming on consoles.
Many of my friends ask me which to get - and I almost never say Mac. It's not worth it for most people. I like Mac software, so I choose Mac.

If you really won't be gaming a mac is probably the better choice. But god help you if you want to play games on it.

You realize that the only difference between Macs & PCs are the price of the system & the OS, right?
Just make a Hackintosh and you have a Mac that you can also run Windows on and play dem games.

I like the mac OS. Last time I checked, a PC won't run OS x like a Mac does.
I specified I don't want to game on it.

you can get a pc laptop fpr $400. the equiv mac costs $1700. but non tech savvy idiots will let themselves get ripped off for apple toys that are easier to use but are more limited.

Re: should I get a mac book or a PC?
Macs are PCs. It's x86 hardware, and can run any OS you like. Macs will be significantly more expensive than other computers for the same hardware, and yes, you can run mac OS on a regular computer.
Also, most people don't realize the computer world isn't a dichotomy. Linux is a wonderful alternative, and it's free. The free software repositories alone put it far ahead of windows or mac OS. For basic computer usage, Linux is just as easy to use, and much more stable. I suggest trying Linux Mint.

I'd say you should get a mac book because you can get it in really cool colors like white, black, or grey

Re: should I get a mac book or a PC?
Get the 15" Macbook Pro. The Anybody who disses them is a faggot who is just butthurt they can't afford it [yeah, maybe it's overpriced, but FUCK YOU, you get what you pay for.]
Just don't get memory or hard disk or SSD upgrades from Apple. Other World Computing and eBay are the way to go.
The 13" Macbook is shit because it's only dual core, the Retina MBP can't be upgraded at all or repaired by you, not even the battery. And yes the normal 15" you can replace their batteries, it just involves taking out the 8 screws on the bottom plate and then the torx screws that hold the battery in which apparently makes Apple tel you that it's not "user replaceable". I guess for most Mac owners they're right, but I can do it in less than 5 minutes.

Re: should I get a mac book or a PC?
I've got a 13" Samsung series 9 and I couldn't be happier with it. It is admittedly similar to a MB in design, but it runs Windows 7 like a champ. It has an SSD so when it goes to sleep it actually hibernates, therefore using no power. I thought it wouldn't be powerful enough to replace my desktop, but I ended up hooking my desktop up to my tv as an HTPC.

Mac OS X used to be the shit, in 2004. Windows 7 and any Linux distro shit all over it nowadays. If you like Mac OS X, you are quite clearly retarded.

Why?
And if you get it and hate it... just boot up Windows XP/Vista/7/8...
[if you can afford the Mac]
/
also, not hating on Windows, I just see it as the way to play games.
/
and also... you ever tried connecting even *modern* linux to a wireless network? Shit is NOT pretty

no, you get the "apple experience" for twice or three times the price of an equally-functional PC.
OP: depends if you really want to pay out literally hundreds extra for an albeit nicely designed/made, yet severely over-hyped, fashion item.
would i have one if i was earning £5k a month? maybe. would i have one when i'm in the market for a good personal computer on a limited budget? fuck no. my machine was £650 and it's far better than any mac in the £1000-1,400 price range. spend the same money on a kick ass PC instead of a shiny thing.

Also, how many PCs these days with a Thunderbolt port?
Yeah, those things kick ass.
--
If you're poor, then go, get a PC... I'd still rather blow $599 on a secondhand Mac Pro with four cores (upgradeable to 8 @ 3.33GHz), can run 32GB memory, 4x hard disks, 2x Radeon 6870s, etc.)

lolwhat pacman is Arch's package manager.
All linux distros with GTK should be able to use it, pretty sure there's a KDE alternative as well... pacman -S is just the install package option. Pretty easy to use, similar to Windows' Wireless Zero Configurator.

No, Macs are just PCs running Mac OS and OSx is just DRM'd to Macs only. If you hackintosh, it'll run exactly as well as a Mac would. Lrn2PC.

QFT
OP buy a windows computer, then dual boot with ubuntu or something. Also if your a real tool you can configure linux to function and look visually the same as a mac (though why would you do that when you can have it customized to your tastes specifically.)
I would only reccomend dual booting if you like to mess around with computers though. It can be frustrating and a pain sometimes, but overall so much better.
I don't know why anyone would buy a mac, but I also don't care - probably the same people who pay for their software and music.

I hope people realize this guy is trolling...
Don't get a Dell or an HP. If those are your only choices besides a Macbook then you might as well get a Macbook
If you have the money to blow on a Macbook, I would get that and dual-boot with Windows 7 (easy enough to torrent Windows 7), then you can have the best of both worlds. Although, you will save money by getting a Windows based machine (I will not say PC, because Macs are PCs too!!!). Get a Lenovo if you want a Windows machine, they are built extremely tough and have good warranty support, plus they are pretty easy to upgrade and replace parts on (NOT TRUE for a Mac, although I guess it's possible that has changed).
Here's a great computer for only $500. You will have to spent at least $1000 to get a decent Macbook.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834246322
That thing will probably be able to do some light gaming too...
And for the record, I am writing this post from a 4 year old Compaq that I spent less than $300 on new, running Ubuntu Linux 10.10 dual booted with Windows XP for gaming. Linux on this thing runs at least as fast and stable as a comparable Mac and I spent way less on this machine. XP is still XP but it still runs really fast on this thing, which came with Vista.

Can someone reccomend me a decent laptop, also how do mac laptops compare with PC's?

Haha, with you thanking the post below you, I'm almost certain you are a troll.
If you're getting a laptop and not gaming on it, I suggest a MacBook. They have the best contrast ratio on any screen I've ever seen, so they still look great on lowest brightness. The touch pad is silky smooth, and they're built pretty solidly. The biggest detractor is the price, and the next is the razor sharp edge. I highly suggest you go try it out at the store and really consider how you will be using it. If you'll be laying in bed a lot of the time, expect the sharp edges to get to you.
Get a MacBook, that is if you have the money to spend. If you want to not spend too much, then get a cheaper non-Apple laptop. Look for reviews online.
I suggest signing up for www.rapidbuyr.com
They'll email you periodically (or daily? I don't know) with GREAT deals. Wait for one that catches your eye, and pick up a good laptop for a few hundred.
But always look up the caveat of a laptop before you buy. For example, my girlfriend has an Dell Inspiron 15xx, and they almost always have a specific fan that goes out.
