To be fair, anything sound likes hippy bullshit if you add a bunch of "like..." and "maaaaan" and "duuudee" to it.

Re: Religious beliefs sound like something an idiotic pothead would say
Religious beliefs sound like something that a person with a skewed perspective on life would say. Which is what it is. All of the oldest religions developed out of twisted thinking, which isn't necessarily a bad thing - for instance, civilization might never have developed without people who saw the world differently.

Why would a pothead want to dream up yet another authority figure to rule their life? I'd think they smoke pot at least partially to be rid of that presence.

Many people like the Italians? Ethiopians kick ass, they were the only country in Africa to resist colonialism. Greedy bastards reached their hands in, they pulled back a nub.

It basically boils down to; "Do this or that and avoid this or that". Some asshole subjectively did that or this and connected it to the avoidance of something that happened after, and in his total narcissism assumed this was cosmic law. Religion is just a confusion of cause and effect, at least when it isn't a form of naked control.

Religion is basically like school. You can graduate and move on to the next level of theology or you can flunk out and become an atheist.

Science takes a purely materialistic stance on the universe, and all atheists believe that the God they disbelieve in must be a material being. Their thought process hasn't allowed for anything immaterial to exist in the universe, despite the evidence for such phenomenon that can be found in their own minds.

Tell me, what does science have to say about mystical experience besides "this or that part of your brain lights up"?

Science hasn't made definitive judgments on mystical experiences because they're incredibly complex and we don't have the tools to assess them yet. Science is based in observation, and as we are able to observe more and more the inner workings of our minds, science will have a lot more to say about mystical experiences.
I know it can be terribly unsettling to admit we don't know how some things work, but personally I find it more dependable than blind faith in a mystical father figure who apparently loves us unconditionally, but won't hesitate to punish us for eternity with infinite pain.

Re: Religious beliefs sound like something an idiotic pothead would say
*note: i don't see myself as atheist (despite my clone thread ), like you i believe we exist in a mystical universe with plenty of surprises yet to be unlocked through experimenting; science is still young and we have much to learn
i do think we're all connected, unified, in ways we cannot perceive, and that this connection is governed by a set of rules (physics is the just start of it's full description)
in that way, i almost want to say i do believe in god- god is everything
but if you say that to anyone they have too many preconcieved notions to understand my view; primarily the thought that god is an individual omnipotent being separate from one's self
i think that because we see ourselves as an isolated individual in a huge world, we imagine god as an individual, when in fact we are more connected to our surroundings than we can imagine and this entire biome we inhabit along with the entire universe comprises "god"
in summary-

Pretty sure the bible was inspired by shrooms. Shrooms have existed for a long time, and they often cause hallucinations described as "spiritual".

also, psychedelics are important for your spiritual evolution and there's plenty of level-headed people who could gain tremendous insight from psychs....
but they don't because authorities have convinced them a sterile, comatose existence is "better" than taking chances in pursuit of a fuller perception of this reality we inhabit; the system in place plays to our fears of what could happen, so we sit around worrying doing as little as possible [read: TV] and die having never lived

Re: Religious beliefs sound like something an idiotic pothead would say
Hm... this is will get buried in the posts, but religious beliefs are pretty broad depending on the religion. The reason they are broad is because of the different translations of the spiritual scripts.
The reason the religious beliefs may seem strange may be because of the way people represented objects or experiences in the past. A popular example is the burning bush Moses spoke with. Was Moses drugged up talking to the burning bush? We don't know. The best approach would be to take that experience figuratively rather than literally.

You are speaking of YHWH/God/Allah too literally, as if He were a humanoid father figure on some distant planet. What if He were the cosmos made conscious, and disconnecting from that idea is suffering?

This quote is an accurate, albeit crude, exposition of fairly primitive--fundamentalistic, that is--Christian theology, such as hard-shell Baptists or maybe Evangelicals, or brain-washed Catholics.
But jeez--even Pope Paul II knew there was no such place as hell.

The entire idea of "hell" was created LONG after heaven, to frighten those who didn't want to follow God's word.

Re: Religious beliefs sound like something an idiotic pothead would say
If "God" means creators.. then we're all on some reality show for an alien species. They put us all the way out here a few thousand years ago, fossils and evolution were just decoys to keep our brains busy from finding the truth after the whole religion thing stopped making sense.
To far from other habitable planets. There's a billion planets that could support life in our galaxy alone. Yet we're all the way out here....?
this is all one big fucking joke to green monsters. How do I know this? because we would do the same thing. Infact we already are.
