5 shots from one individual, under stress, on what is perceived as a deadly threat is a pretty typical response and is what is taught in most reputable training schools.

Five or six shots to the center mass is typically what's required to neutralize a threat when using a service handgun caliber.

I think they shot 46 times but only 30 actually hit him, which makes it roughly 8 shots per person. But it looks like a few of them actually liked shooting him more than the others. I bet one of them nearly emptied his entire mag

the video is shitty and not close, so i can't tell what is happening in it, but 5.56 is absolutely correct in firing 5 shots at a human torso.

You don't shoot once and hope, you fire until the threat is down, 5 seconds or so of firing will give 6 officers the chance to fire about 30 shots.
The issue should not be how many rounds are fired because once you start shooting you continue until the threat is gone. the issue is determining whether or not there was a serious enough threat posed by one old crazy person with a knife to warrant shooting him at all. The number of rounds fired is irrelevant.

so maybe don't attack people who are just contributing technical information on the subject and aren't saying one way or the other whether they agree with you or not.

It's a fact that the appropriate thing to do when you start firing at a target is to continue until the threat is done. If you don't agree you're wrong. Not according to me, not according to 5.56, but according to every authority on combative handgunning.

Keep shooting them when they are on the ground.

They could be playing dead and never have even been shot and shoot you when you're not looking. Or they could have been shot and not killed and shoot you, once again, when you're not looking or shooting at something else.

This was clearly poor planning on the officers part. With that many there with guns already drawn, you'd think one or two would pull their tasers instead. Offer a non-fatal option to the threat. How many guns do you need trained on a guy with a knife and no hostage? Probably only three at best.

I'm assuming the cops were thinking a couple of different things that triggered their reaction. One, that he might be making a run for it. Though I'm not sure why the lethal force was suddenly needed in and of that itself. Two, that the guy might be making a move to take a hostage. Now I can't see anyone nearby, nor can I imagine anyone blindly walking into a situation where a guy is wielding a knife while about half a dozen officers have guns trained on him. But it's possible he could have ran off if they'd let him and grabbed a potential hostage if they didn't stop him. Or three, they rapidly fired off enough shots to kill the suspect rather than wound because they didn't want to deal with someone that came off as "not right in the head" that was still armed with a knife. Someone (of them) would still have to disarm him, and if he's really crazy, or even drugged out he's still capable of cutting you. No one wants to get cut, or even deal with that. So they just took the easy, lazy way out. Kill the prep, no threat to you, your fellow officers, or anyone else.

Exactly. Even with that much firepower aimed on the guy, they could have neutralized him anyway they wanted. Problem is, they didn't choose to do that and a lot of people are going to see this and question why. As is always said when people ask. "Why couldn't they just shoot to wound?", no one is ever taught or asked to shoot to wound.

Everyone who is given lessons in firing at a human is told to aim at the center of the torso where all the vital organs are. The torso is also the biggest target. The only place you'll find shooting to wound is in Hollywood.

Besides: a head shot is too hard and a gut shot is too cruel. You can try your fancy-ass picky shots at little targets when you're out in the country shootin' at shit.
