Default How long does it take to get physically addicted to alcohol?

If you drink everyday. Not crazy amounts everyday, but like 4-6 beers a day, how long would it take before your body becomes dependent?

I'm not sure drinking just 4-6 beers a day will ever make you physically dependent. If it does, it'll take several months.

But it depends on the person, mostly.

That depends what you mean by dependent. If you drink that many beers for a few weeks/months straight, when you don't drink - you might crave them. That's about it.

But, if you're talking about shaking/shitting your pants/delirium tremens - it's different for everybody. Regardless, it's still a lot. Like, a ton of booze all the time for a long time. Most seasoned alcoholics took a long time of drinking to get them that way.

Well I've been drinking like 4-6 beers everyday for about 4-5 months now, and I'm starting to get really crazy if I don't get my after work beer, like if I work late, and miss my normal happy hour, I'll be about ready to beat someone to death for no reason. I have a feeling I'm beginning to become dependent on alcohol.

I don't get the shakes or shit myself lol, but like I said in the post above, if I don't get my daily dose of beer I will pretty much be very very irritable, and I won't hesitate to use violence once irritated. I'm just full of the vinegar.

Once I have a couple beers the anger melts away and I feel like a monk.

I'm pretty sure I'm an alcoholic.

Honestly sounds more like a psychological addiction, but with a hint of physical dependence thrown in.

I forgot to mention that I'm also pretty much addicted to nicotine, and I only smoke after work when I drink. I don't smoke at work because everyone else chain smokes and if I started smoking at work I'd be going through a pack and a half a day in no time and I don't want to smoke that much. I also work a stressful job (which is why everyone else chain smokes) so that doesn't help either. I felt physically sick the other day when I worked OT, like I might puke, and when I got home I drank a tallboy of 10% beer and smoked a hit of weed and a smoke and I felt totally cured. That probably isn't healthy.

4-6 isn't CRAZY, but it's definitely a lot. It's enough to make your body notice when it's not there.

I normally drink a 10% tallboy as soon as I get home (and smoke weed and smokes after that), then I have 1 or 2 or 3 tall boys of around 6% before eating dinner and going to sleep. Depends on when I get home.

If you wake up and the first thing you want is a can of beer, and you tremble and sweat until you down a cold can first thing in the morning to feel better and get even more bloodshot eyes, then you're not physically addicted yet.

Good to know, I don't feel bad in the mornings and I never drink before or during work, and sometimes I work 16+ hour shifts. Although I start feeling like total shit after the 13-14 hour mark.

you better fill up some water bottles with vodka and toss them in your work pack to fend off those cravings incognito.

Also, 16+ hour shifts? What the hell do you do? some greasy mining/rig/construction job?

Haha no, I would get busted for sure and even if I could get away with it, I wouldn't because I work a dangerous job and need to be sober. Not to mention I drive a van or truck full of extremely expensive equipment long distances and through busy city ares. Today I was in a hurry and driving fast through a busy city street and cars were parked on both sides and the oncoming traffic was also going fast and we were only missing each other by inches and in some cases a few centimeters, weaving in and out from the center of the road to spots with no cars, to center road, I was like driving in a snake pattern constantly missing both parked and moving cars by mere inches. Shit was crazy, if I tried that after a few drinks the results would be terrible.

Its definitely an industry most people haven't heard about, it involves driving, using expensive equipment, doing demolition, doing construction repair, and some other things that I am intentionally not going to be specific about. Not one part of the job is high or drunk friendly. I worked a 26 hour shift once. Not fun. Good money though.

It sounds like you got the routine down. Though long term alcohol consumption must be terrible on your liver, but who knows its a gamble.

I'm pretty sure it's a case of habitual/psychological + physical addiction that makes you an alcoholic.

I went for a while of long alcoholic withdrawl symptoms last year. I now try and aim for 2-3 days a week complete sobriety.

When you start handling hangovers stupidly well you start wondering what you would be like sober more.

My problem is I associate alcohol with getting laid.. Now I want a girlfriend who I can be with and occasionally drunk with. I've had it recently but not allowed continuously due to travelling.

I would get drunk once every 1-3 nights for like the past year and had no WD except craving alcohol. Then I went on a drinking spree for 4 days and when the booze was gone I felt like I had the worst flu and low-level DT's (weird random thoughts and images) and insomnia.

I drank 300-500mL of vodka 3-4 nights per week for 8 months, then about 500-600mL per day for 3 months, and had a withdrawal seizure out of the blue about 16 hours after finishing a binge involving roughly 750mL of vodka. Take from this what you will; this is merely what I have experienced.

It depends, for example, I drink about 6 beers a day, but all in about 2 hours, shortly before i go to sleep. This makes me unable to fall asleep without alcohol, which is dependency, but out of all the drunks i know, i don't know anyone who gets dts.

Back when I was drinking a lot I had to hold my first 2 shots of the night with 2 hands cause I was shaking so much. Not fun. I was spending 5-600 a week on liquor at the bar though with a 50% discount. It's not easy to get to that point.

abv ????? 5-6 cans of 5%ters is just like 2-3 10%ters or less than a glassful of 100proffs.

After I started drinking at least half a litre of vodka for about 6 weeks, that's when I started getting the DTs pretty bad. After another month, I ended up having a seizure despite not actually going off it.

Default Re: How long does it take to get physically addicted to alcohol?

For a while there when I was drinking about 12 pints of 5% ABV or equivalent nightly (180lb/82kg body weight, for reference,) I became somewhat physically dependent after 3-4 months or so. However, as far as I can tell my dependence was simply on the high caloric intake (~1500 or more calories per night) of the alcohol, not the alcohol itself. Never experienced delirium tremens, or for that matter anything worse than I'd expect from fasting for a day or two. I could avoid symptoms by drinking a 2 liter or full-leaded soda (850-900 cal,) or eating something equally unhealthy. These days I have no problems with drinking or not drinking.

I would expect that my tolerance is an outlier; that most normal people would have a much more negative experience than I had at that high level of repeated alcohol dosing.

I'd also posit that anyone suffering from alcohol withdrawals should be mindful of the significant drop in their caloric intake when they quit drinking. Of course there are many other factors that cause and contribute to withdrawals, but such an immediate change in calories consumed can and will exacerbate symptoms.

You are now, and have been so for some time.

BTW, it is possible to be physically addicted to alcohol without being an alcoholic, but it is very rare. . . .

I went a few months drinking four-seven days a week. Towards the end it got to the point where my friend and i were scrounging up change to buy our nightly bottle of liquor, and i could tell i was psychologically dependent on it. Then the semester ended and i went back to normal. My dad was an alcoholic for a long time, but he quit completely a year or two ago. I can't imagine being physically dependent on alcohol. Being addicted to heroin was bad enough, but at least those withdrawals aren't life-threatening. My dad told me some crazy stories about guys he was in rehab with who had w/d's so bad that they didn't know where they were and were just delirious all the time. To the point where if they relapse, they're probably just going to end up killing themselves. Comparatively, opioid addiction is pretty tame.

i just got out of a year period that was heavy at first, but wound down to the few beverages a nite, to nothing. it was after getting clean though, which is why i drank like that i guess. i took a few days off here and there and the only real thing i noticed was i slept better not drinking. i ended up switching it out once i got my med status fixed [i actually can't drink at the moment]

after the horrific dope crap i went through though, my lense is from a different angle...

I would say at least a few months for most people. I drank heavily for a couple of months straight and then stopped with no ill effects. Seen many others do the same.

My father was dependant on alcohol for over a year, it was in his blood 24/7 as he'd get up in the morning shaking like a shitting dog, have a large whisky and that would sort him out, he'd then continue to drink all day until he fell asleep at night, he used to nail a full 70cl bottle of whisky a day at least, even more at weekends.

lol soon its going to be like 7 months of daily drinking for me. I should take a break, but if I did, I would probably quit my job. Or actually, since I would have to pay the company a few G's if I quit in the next six months (since they paid for some expensive courses I took), I would probably just force them to fire me. Which would be lulzy.

That sounds like quiting alcohol interferes more with your life then drinking. As a rule, people only quits drinking if it severely fucks up their lives and inpedes their functionality in the society ... not the other way round.

My advice for you is to keep drinking, responsibly, and be a functioning employee.

My advice for you is to keep drinking, responsibly, and be a functioning employee.

sounds like maybe the OP is just stressed or something. i mean like for example i don't drink very often, but like I had this really stressfull job a few months ago, and I also was worried about having got this girl pregnant, I was really tense all the time and couldn't sit still but I'd get back to my room and chill out and drink a few beers...the feeling was so nice that when, during that month I didn't get my beer after work beerz, like if the store was already closed, and my gf didn't want me to go to the pub to get some alcohol i'd get so pissed off. like really I'm just all "JUST LET ME HAVA FEW DRINKS DAMMIT" it sounds really alcoholic but then again, given a non-stressful life I don't need to drink at all. still tho alcoholics are pretty depressing so i'd be careful still

I've been drinking everyday for about a year and a half now, I have to have a bottle or two of wine a day and I'll supplement that with beers & hard alcohol. I prefer to just drink wine though.

When I don't get my drank or it takes too long to get I experience anxiety, nausea, inability to eat or sleep, I become antisocial, and I get really desperate for drink or drugs.

No shakes or anything though.

Over the summer I was drinking 6 out of 7 day. Upon ceasing I experienced only mental symptoms, comparable to how I feel right now that I don't have any weed. I intend to steer well clear of alcohol addiction.

It can also depend on if youve been addicted before. If you have they come quicker and quicker
